Preheat #3 Turned off
I shut this one off so the starters don't die. The outside is either a blue-gray color or black and the inside of the reflector is white.

Looks like a F30 preheat!

UPDATE: I found out there are three more of these lights in the basement. One has a pair of DURO-TEST cool white lamps in it. They have GE styled endcaps. It's controlled by a switch (no pull chain i don't think). Then there's one with a pair of Westie F40/CW lamps that's controlled by a pull-chain. And both of those fixtures and their lamps and starters work perfectly! the last one has no lamps but had a westie F40/CW and a red etched GE 34W MISER lamp in it. The Westie was gently blackened but the MISER lamp looked like new.

Interestingly, the fixtures are mounted to the subfloor in the basement in between the joists. That said, there's no way to acess the starters on the sides unless you remove the reflector, as the reflector is just narrow enough to fit between the joists. Anyway, I'm going to see if i can get all six of these fixtures. The three in the garage have replacement fixtures stashed in the corner that were simply never installed. lamps too. So these three in the garage i can replace without buying anything. for the three in the basement I'll need to buy three fixtures and four lamps (as there would be two extra F32T8 alto lamps from the case in the (...) Nope F40T12. from this angle it does look like a F30T12 though. I REALLY hope I'll be allowed to fix these, as all but 1 of the 6 T12 lamps are dead and half of the starters are dead as well. One of the preheats was replaced by a cheesy F32 shoplight, but I guess my cousin's grandpa never got around to changing the other three (thankfully). There are three other F32 lights as well as a dozen F32T8 Altos too. no F40 lamps though...

Good luck! I wonder if the starters are bad in the lampless one? Seems to me if it "Wasn't Working" I'd pull the bulbs personally...
streetlight98   [Dec 28, 2013 at 11:26 PM]
yeah that could be... the lights in the garage all had matching starters but mismatched lamps which tells me he had never changed any of the starters out there. and since the starters are blocked in the basement the same is probably true there.

Especially in the basement. I guess you could remove the reflector to access the starters. I'd try with the ones in the garage to change lamps and starters at the same time but for the ones in the basement I admittedly would wait till the starters either totally die or get so slow it takes like minutes for any lamp to fire in a fixture.

eh being the cheapo i am i'd figure out which part(s) were bad and replace only those parts lol. the fixture with the durotest lamps took about five seconds to start one lamp and about 45 seconds to start the other one. at first i thought one of the lamps was dead.

I don't know what I'll do. the next time i go over i'll bring a pair of starters.

Hmm, might be a slow firing starter. Yeah, replacing the starters would be a good idea. I've seen some that won't work in total darkness too.
streetlight98   [Dec 29, 2013 at 03:08 AM]
they won't work in the dark? i've never heard of light sensitive starters. Neutral

I have an old "Star" (Lights of America) cicline adapter I found NOS at the Restore at my mother's house in CA that's "Afraid of the Dark", as soon as you turn on another light it will fire right up!
streetlight98   [Dec 29, 2013 at 03:29 AM]
hmm that's really weird. I've never heard of that.

I guess it's true...I bet metal "can" starters are really toast when that happens!
I always thought those transparent green Leviton starters were cool...ever seen those? Like I said, I have a thing for whatever reason for those Leviton starters and daylight Altos in a preheat fixture...going "Green" for a preheater! Laughing
