Magnatron 175 Watt Mercury Vapor Security Light
Here is the Magnatron 175 watt mercury vapor security light installed on a 4x4 post in our yard in the back of our house. I just installed this light a few weeks ago replacing a compact fluorescent security light. I will probably be removing this light and post in a few weeks cause the same guy at LCEC who gave me the OVC and OVF also gave me a junk street light pole that I will be installing as soon as the new light and mast arm I ordered for it arrives.

Im not sure. I asked the lady i talked to from AEL and she said all their lights are standard with mogul base. I hope its mogul base. It was suprisingly cheap. It includes the lamp and the photocontrol for about $110. The arm is about $50. I don't have a receipt yet. It was just ordered yesterday.

Well if its a mogul base, which I assume it would be, you will need socket adapter since 35 watt HPS lamps only come in medium base.
HPSM250R2   [Feb 04, 2012 at 08:19 PM]
Well it might be medium base then. I wasn't sure if 35 watt HPS lamps come in mogul base. But i would think that if 35 watt is medium base only, they would put a medium socket in the light.
joe_347V   [Feb 04, 2012 at 08:37 PM]
Hmm I wonder if the 115 can take a medium socket because I know some lights can only fit a mogul socket, maybe they'll ship it out with a adapter?
mercuryvaporrocks   [Feb 04, 2012 at 08:41 PM]
I know pulse start metal halide is only available in medium base for certain wattages (70-175).
gailgrove   [Feb 04, 2012 at 08:43 PM]
Not true, PSMH lamps now come in mogul base for all wattages, also there are no 175 watt PSMH lamps and ballasts as far as I know.
mercuryvaporrocks   [Feb 04, 2012 at 08:59 PM]
I already know they make mogul base PSMH bulbs for all wattages. What I'm saying is American Electric doesn't offer mogul base in certain wattages for their streetlights.
streetlight98   [Feb 04, 2012 at 09:24 PM]
Since the lamps are medium base I'd assume the socket will be medium base. They actually do make 175w PSMH ballasts and lamps.
joe_347V   [Feb 04, 2012 at 09:29 PM]
My guess is mogul with a adapter since if they used a medium socket the reflector won't be sealed properly.
gailgrove   [Feb 04, 2012 at 09:38 PM]
I actually kind of forgot, I don't see the need for them with 150 and 200 watt lamps though...
streetlight98   [Feb 04, 2012 at 10:09 PM]
Yeah me neither. You get the lumens of a 175w probe MH lamp by using a 150w PSMH lamp. I'd Imagine 175w PSMH would be pretty bright for a side street.
gramirez2012   [Feb 04, 2012 at 10:46 PM]
I've never seen mogul base available for low wattage lamps like 35 HPS and 70/100 PSMH. I didn't know 70/100 PSMH was available in mogul. AEL and GE only offer medium sockets for <175w MH.
streetlight98   [Feb 04, 2012 at 11:31 PM]
The only company I know of that makes mogul base 50, 70, 100, and 150 watt lamps is Plusrite.
joe_347V   [Feb 05, 2012 at 02:20 AM]
I saw a Standard 70w mogul MH at a hardware store before.
gailgrove   [Feb 05, 2012 at 02:33 AM]
I know Philips makes them, I think others may make them as well.
streetlight98   [May 04, 2012 at 01:06 AM]
Has the 115 arrived yet?
HPSM250R2   [May 04, 2012 at 04:48 AM]
Yes the 115 actually arrived a few weeks ago. I still haven't installed it yet cause im trying to figure out how im going to get the pole in the ground without a machine to pick it up. It's very heavy. The ballast is very tiny in the 115. But it is only 35 watts though. And it did come with a mogul to medium socket adapter. The adapter was already installed in the mogul socket when i opened the box. It came with a Philips 35 watt HPS lamp and a blue DTL photocontrol.
streetlight98   [May 04, 2012 at 08:27 PM]
Hmm. I guess than if i were to order a 70W PSMH 115 I could use mogul base 100W mercs w/o an adapter than. i know the GE PSMH lights under 175W come with medium base sockets since I've FCO 150W PSMH M-250A2 FCO in New Hampshire on utility poles in a parking lot. Ironic to see than since all the M-250A2s are either 150W HPS or 250W HPS. The GE Powr/Brackets with astrodome PCs are mercs though despite having 70W HPS NEMA tags on them.

How much strength does the metal strap add to the arm? I have an arm very similar to that. I purchased it with the intentions of mounting a cobrahead on it but then I found the single metal piece isn't strong enough to support it.
HPSM250R2   [Feb 18, 2018 at 12:02 AM]
It added quite a bit of strength. I had a FCO 35 watt HPS AEL 115 on this pole setup for a while. This pole is not there anymore though. Took it down several years ago. I installed a solar motion activated light on the wall that lasted a couple years. I could probably just replace the battery but I have tried convincing my dad to run a wire to install a real light.
