I never saw anything like this before Shocked Shocked Shocked . There are no reasons for a traffic light to catch fire.
I hope that the police was came to, turned off the traffic lights, and directed the traffic later, while the maintenance company replaces the fried traffic light.

American Polycarbonate signal heads have flame retardant in them. They will melt if a flame is exposed to them...they will not ignite.

A traffic light controller(box) at the end of my street caught fire 3 yrs. ago. It litterally exploded. The wiring was said to be tampered with and shorted. They don't lock the boxes around here! The box still isn't locked. And some of them, the subpanel and meter are wide open, and I can flip the breakers off! (Or plug something in as there is an outlet too!) LOL

Sounds like a faulty locking mechanism...mine, like most modern cabinets, lock immediately when the handle is turned down.

If they are not locked and surrounded with a cage here they get stripped overnight for copper and other metal.

We only use aluminum here and on top of that our signals are mostly LED, so the odds of this are low.

Maybe a fire happened in this picture because they used a junk CFL retrofit. And it failed. xD

Ian a CFL retrofit would not work in a traffic signal for very long, though that is possibly what did happen!

Yeah the frequent switching would kill it. I've seen PAR lamps in traffic signals before. Shocked Rolling Eyes

No. When we conerted to LED, the VERY few programmed visibility signals were replaced.

The programmed signals are still incandescent as far as I know, We even have some 8" 3M adapters still in use.
