New goodies
New curlee 8 foot tapered elliptical bracket and GE M400A2. I'm thinking the two would look nice on my pole out back. The fixture is 200 watt hps so it should light up the yard nicely.

Nice additions! The M-400R2 and M-400A2 are officially no more so this could be considered a "rare" light now (or in a few years). GE also no longer offers any MH products and discontinued most of their non-LED products. Cooper only offers PSMH cobraheads in 250 and 400W. Nothing less than 250W except in NEMA fixtures. AEL seems to still offer a full line. That's a nice arm too. Tapered arms always rock. Surprised
Mercuryvapor123   [Feb 16, 2017 at 09:15 PM]
It's sad, GE even discontinued the power bracket.
streetlight98   [Feb 17, 2017 at 10:08 AM]
Yep the Powerflood is gone too. Sad At least the M-250R2m M-250A2, M-400, and M-400A are still made (though who knows for how much longer)

Nice.
And that light looks brand new! (I'm assuming it is too?)

@Mike:
Why would GE discontinue their MH lights but not HPS?
streetlight98   [Feb 18, 2017 at 02:25 PM]
The HPS products are far more popular. Virtually no utility company uses MH, and those that do are typically small municipal utilities with low demand. GE Lighting Systems was primarily geared toward utility grade products. Their "designer" products have pretty much all been discontinued altogether (even HPS; replaced by some variation of the Evolve).

For outdoor lights GE only still makes the M-400, M-400A, M-250R2, M-250A2, 201SA (NEMA head), Town & Country (coach style post top), and Americana (prismatic globe post top). And for indoor they only offer a lowbay light. Other than that they only offer LED products. GE has severely streamlined their products.

Cooper pretty much did the same thing as GE, though they still offer PSMH in 250 and 400W for cobraheads and 100W for NEMA heads (if they offer it for NEMA heads I don't understand why they can't offer it for the OVZ and OVH but it is what it is...) If I were Cooper and wanted to streamline my products, I'd discontinue the OVZ and just offer the OVH with a drop lens (use the same fixture design for drop lens and FCO). I like the OVZ design better but the OVH has a "flat" refractor instead of being tilted upward so the OVZ really isn't a suitable FCO fixture.

Metal halide also has a much shorter life span than mercury vapor and high pressure sodium and it costs more to maintain them which is why most utility companies stay away from them.
chapman84   [Feb 18, 2017 at 03:02 PM]
My 100 watt OVZ came with a flat lens and I replaced it with a 2 way refractor. I don't like full cutoff street lights. They just don't look right and they don't project enough light down the street.
streetlight98   [Feb 18, 2017 at 04:31 PM]
Yeah they offer the OVZ with FCO glass as an option but it looks silly since the lens is tilted up like a flood light. What's "full cut off" about that? lol The OVH, OVF, AEL 315, AEL 125, M-250R2, and M-250A2 don't look terrible as FCO but they sure look better as drop lens lights. And like you said, FCO fails to throw the light very far, a problem with many LED lights. GE's M-250R2/A2 FCO lights actually do a decent job throwing the light nice and evenly (I'd dare to say their FCO lights perform better than their drop lens lights lol. GE's drop lens lights are very glary and create bright and dim spots on the ground whereas their FCO lights have a more even light disbursement). Now GE's round plastic lenses (made by Formed Plastics) are excellent and perform very well (in comparison to the squared lens). I also like the look of the round lens a little more on the M-250R2.
chapman84   [Feb 18, 2017 at 05:46 PM]
They should offer semi cutoff street lights like the M-250R2 in LED's. Not only would they look better, they would be more visable at night than those awful waffles inappropriately called street lights. I don't know what made all these lighting companies, especially GE think it was a good idea to make their LED street lights look so hideous.
streetlight98   [Feb 19, 2017 at 01:09 AM]
It would be nice to see more LED cobraheads like the OVH, OVF, and Hubbell RM (Hubbell no longer makes any cobraheads, HID or LED, BTW) but the trend is toward slim items. Just look had how cellphones, computers, and TVs have gotten slimmer and slimmer. It's just a fad, like how everything in the 70s and 80s was boxy (cars are the most obvious example of that). By the 80s, the "shoebox" parking lot light had become popular. The Unidor was boxy, the M-250A2 was boxy. And Westinghouse redesigned the OV-15 and OV-25 to be boxy (what some refer to as the L-150 and L-250, though that designation never existed). The cobrahead had a pretty good run though. It's been 60 years since the first cobrahead was invented, and they've been the primary fixture used.

When MV first came out, they made some incandescent fixtures in MV such as gumballs and crescent moon fixtures but ultimately those vertical lamp fixtures lost out to the cobrahead. On a similar token, some cobraheads are made with LEDs but unfortunately the design is being phased out, so it's up to us collectors to save as many of these as we can and save them from being lost in time. Fortunately, cobraheads have been around a long enough time where there are millions out there so they're bound to be around for awhile. Even if they just end up being installed in people's backyard for security lighting or something (that would be kinda neat actually!)

I'm gonna contact my local power company to see if I can acquire some HID street lights from them, I doubt it but it doesn't hurt to try. I would love to get my hands on a GE M-250R 175 or 250 watt mercury vapor, a 400 watt mercury vapor and a 1000 watt mercury vapor street light. I used to buy street lights from Duquesne Light, but they don't accept them at their warehouse on the North Shore in Pittsburgh anymore and they're loaded into box cars which aren't accessible.
streetlight98   [Feb 19, 2017 at 06:45 PM]
Around here, the removed lights come back to the local yard and are thrown into a scrap dumpster. But they won't sell them to the public. What I'd really like to get is some mounting arms from my local utility. Mounting arms are insanely expensive new and besides, I'd want ones that were actually used around here anyway.
chapman84   [Feb 19, 2017 at 07:50 PM]
There was a guy on LG who used to get street lights from a scrap yard in Missouri and he would sell them for $20-$25 plus shipping. I bought quite a few street lights from him, but he deleted all of his pictures and he never came back.
streetlight98   [Feb 19, 2017 at 09:12 PM]
Was it that "Pat the Ripper" guy? I vaguely remember a guy who used to sell lights on LG. I had never bought anything from him though. There are several longtime members that seem to have just "vanished" off the Net. Most still have their accounts up but are just never active while others have totally deleted their account.
chapman84   [Feb 19, 2017 at 09:50 PM]
Yeah that's him. He was active on there for about 3 or 4 years and after he deleted all of his pictures, the administrators subsequently deleted his account to save some space.

I miss some of the members on LG who were on there since the site started and after they left, it became a ghost town. Being on LG is like going to a dead mall like Century III Mall in West Mifflin, PA which was once packed, but now 80% of the store fronts are vacant. There's no chance that it's ever gonna come back. I left last year for personal reasons.

Pat was one of the original admins. I bought some Silverliners from him, only paid shipping. Also gotten couple of other items like glass NEMA diffusers, head.
streetlight98   [Feb 19, 2017 at 11:25 PM]
I wonder what happened to him? IIRC, I think he was giving up the hobby? I might be confusing him with someone else though. I do remember him being an admin. I miss the old admin team on LG. Nothing against any of the current admins personally, but the "old leadership" was more proactive and dynamic with the members. The current leadership takes a backseat and doesn't get involved enough with the members IMO. Jace used to do contests and polls and keep up the general interest in the site (more so here than LG) but both sites are kinda static now. Especially this site. Where are all he admins? The members? Seems like there's only a few of us who are still on the site regularly. The rest are on maybe once every six months and then we don't hear from them.

It's too bad. I miss all the street light talk. Too much talk about the science behind lighting on LG. I'm not a scientist or engineer. I just like the fixtures and lamps and want to talk with others who feel the same. I've also noticed LG is becoming increasingly theory-based and less talk about the fixtures themselves. It seems there's a continuous shift toward fluorescent-oriented talk rather than street lights too. I remember it used to be fairly even, possibly even with a shift toward street lights. I'm one of the few diehard street light fans on LG lol. Quite a few members have a street light or two but they could honestly take them or leave them. They're just not as passionate.

Oh well. Neutral Still a good site and I still learn new stuff all the time. It's just different that's all...
joe_347V   [Feb 19, 2017 at 11:41 PM]
I sorta remember Pat, He used to obtain streetlights that were scrapped and then pass them of to collectors. Not sure what happened to him though. Yeah, I miss the old LG too. I'm also not sure what happened to most of the members too. I guess lost interest, and some don't have time anymore.

Yeah I miss the street light talk too, and TBH I'm not really interested in the theory most times. I get enough engineering stuff talking to my engineering classmates and collegues lol so I like to talk more about lights instead of the theory lol.
xmaslightguy   [Feb 21, 2017 at 01:14 AM]
I tend to post streetlight related stuff here on GOL (and in general not on LG which I post fluorescents/xmas/other more general lighting on)...I've always seen GOL as more of a streetlight & HID related site.

I also check out ATL from time to time, but rarely ever post anything these days.
There's another UK based site that I check out fairly regularly, & sometimes post fluorescents or streetlights on.

--------------
Some of the science/technical stuff posted on LG can actually be quite interesting!
I'm more of a fluorescent (and Christmas light (hence the username)) guy than any other types Laughing
but still thin HID & streetlights are cool (I wish I had storage space for more, and they were easier/cheaper to come by)

---------------
I'll also flat out say I really don't care for certain members on LG (but not gonna mention any names)
