Lithonia Wraparound
Here's a replacement wraparound I got to replace the old one in my room that had a broken diffuser. It came with a cheap Accu-Pro ballast so I removed it and put the custom ballast setup from my old wraparound back in.

The ballasts are a Sylvania 2 lamp IS wired for one lamp and a Sylvania/Motorola electronic RS ballast. Unlike the newer electronic RS ballasts that starts the lamp instantly, this one has a bit of startup flicker.

Sockets were Levitons salvaged from the old light and lamps are Philips natural sunshine 5000K T8s.

nice setup! i like how you coiled the wires
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Apr 07, 2013 at 05:47 PM]
Another trick for cleaning up ballast channels (especially with multiple ballasts or lights wired in tandem) is to use zip ties...
joe_347V   [Apr 07, 2013 at 06:39 PM]
Thanks Aaron! Zip ties aren't recommended for electronic ballasts, especially when two or more ballasts are used in the same fixture...
streetlight98   [Apr 07, 2013 at 06:56 PM]
nice set up! Smile who said zip ties aren't recomended? IMO it's all a matter of personal preference. Razz Me, i'm lazy and just fold the wires lol.

I think it was either someone on LG or from a manual on the Advance site. I've only started coiling the wires recently though. Before I used to fold them over or cut off the extra wire.

I've only ever used the zip tie trick on magnetic rapid start but why shouldn't it be used for electronic ballasts?
joe_347V   [Dec 21, 2013 at 05:37 AM]
I think it had something to do with the higher frequencies.
streetlight98   [Dec 21, 2013 at 02:08 PM]
Hmm that's odd. I usually just stuff the extra wire down in the cavities where the sockets are at each end lol.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Dec 21, 2013 at 02:21 PM]
Hmm that's interesting...
As for custom ballast setups, what was the idea here? Unique startup/if one ballast dies the other lamp stays lit?
Right now I have a 400w multitap MH ballast running a 277v Advance single-lamp T8 ballast off the 277v tap (it's wired to 120v like normal and just acting as a step-up transformer) running a spent GE Chroma 50 that's REALLY black at both ends. I bet it sat EOL dim-glowing on magnetic rapid start for many months or even years to be this black! It's gone like this for a couple weeks now...and seems to be hanging in there! Shocked
streetlight98   [Dec 21, 2013 at 07:46 PM]
when one lamp in a two lamp RS ballast is dead often it really blackens the good lamp a lot too though the good lamp will usually last a little while longer.
joe_347V   [Dec 21, 2013 at 09:52 PM]
Well, in this case it was to make the fixture less boring and to make the lamps run brighter since I find single lamp operation has a higher BF.
streetlight98   [Dec 22, 2013 at 12:18 AM]
you should put your magnetic ballast in this fixture. Cool Very Happy
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Dec 22, 2013 at 12:27 AM]
Still very cool! And yeah it might be brighter, and it seems to me that if one lamp/ballast died the other will still work!
I guess you could use two single-lamp magnetic rapid start ballasts or two 2-lamp ones shunted for one lamp...
joe_347V   [Dec 22, 2013 at 05:31 AM]
Unfortunate the ballast channel is too narrow for a proper magnetic ballast to fit...even the Motorola/Sylvania RS one had trouble fitting.
streetlight98   [Dec 22, 2013 at 02:29 PM]
ahh I see. yeah i hate how fixtures have shrunk, prohibbiting magnetic ballasts from fitting. Mad
joe_347V   [Dec 22, 2013 at 11:54 PM]
Yeah, same here. Mad
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Dec 23, 2013 at 01:18 AM]
But it allows the efficient, long-lasting electronic ballasts and less metal, and can be made by children in an overseas factory who are only paid a few cents a day! Laughing

Must look interesting to have instant-start and rapid-start in the same fixture!
