Preparing for the Hurricane Sandy! PLUS PEPCO RANT!
|
Yep our brand new generator we can and shall use if "Reliable BGE" could not resist Sandy....
Generator is STRONGLY ADVISED for the "Unreliable PEPCO"
How unreliable is PEPCO? See the answer here
PEPCO is so much disliked there are even groups trying to do something about it such as
- PACK UP PEPCO!
- Powerupmontco
- http://mocopublicpower.org/ (this page stated that PEPCO is Anti-American) <SHOCK!>
Glad I am under BGE, unfortunately Felipe lives about 12-14 poles away from the BGE territory line, causing him to be powered by PEPCO, but fortunately his part of PEPCO seems more reliable than most areas of PEPCO. Sadly my area seems less reliable due to the forest I live in, but BGE action is much quicker to fix!
One of my friends was out of power in PEPCO land for 15 days from our June 29, 2012 Derecho! That is ridiculous!

I don't think we're going to lose power but if I do, I'll update using my phone.
One piece of advice I can give you if you're without grid power for several days/weeks since like I said I live off the grid is that refrigerators/freezers will do fine as long as they aren't opened for up to 24 hours, however they do well with about 4 hours of power a day (I'd reccomend like 2 hours in the morning and 2 in the evening).
And yours is also certainly big enough to run a washer/dryer and if necessary, bigger power tools such as skillsaws, etc.
Might not be a bad idea to stock up on some gas though.
But yeah, I personally think it's nice to have a generator handy even if you live somewhere with grid power, especially in areas prone to large natural diasters like hurricanes and tornadoes.
Are you going to try running anything like HID lights on this?
