CGE 8-8-8 [Gone]
Since winter came earlier here this year it was spared to live for another year. Unfortunately this spring as the construction restarts it will come down. The crews were going to put temporary signals up but the signals disappeared for the winter. I also wanted a better quality photo because my new phone has a lot better quality. This is the last CGE 8-8-8 in this city.

Yeah, I think they'll probably remove it when it gets warmer. Looks like the only 8-8-8s left in the GTA after will be the ones on Dixie in Mississauga.
Model25FanForever   [Jan 21, 2014 at 11:12 PM]
Yeah they will, it might come down earlier because this week or maybe a few weeks now my city is doing a LED module change. I don't think they are going to get 8" red when the standard is 12" red. No full signals are being replaced that I know of but only all the modules are being changed to theseFortran incandescent look. The 5 econolite bullseyes I know of around are no longer dim and the few remaining CGE's are too. Very Happy They are much brighter then the pixelated modules that have been in them since the Incandescent changeout. Razz
I don't think they will be replacing any signals around here anytime soon for being burn't out.

Yeah, I know in Toronto they never bothered retrofitting the 8-8-8 lights as they slowly replaced them with new LED Fortrans and LFEs 12-8-8s during the conversion. Same thing happened in Markham too. I think Mississauga and Brampton were the only places in the GTA that retrofitted the 8-8-8s to LED.

York Region mass changed out the mix of Dialight extended view, Duralight, Swarco, and Dialight incandescent look LEDs to EOI incandescent look LEDs in late 2012. I personally like the look of the EOI incandescent look LEDs but on the other hand I miss the variety we used to have.

Oh I had entirely forgot about the one in Downtown Brampton. It doesn't have any plate but its CGE and 8-8-8. Yeah I remember when there were quite a few in the center medians in Brampton. When I think far back there was a 8-8-8 and the poles here were black davits.
joe_347V   [Jan 24, 2014 at 01:12 AM]
Dude, that's probably the last backplate less CGE 8-8-8 left in the GTA. Shocked Toronto used to have a some 8-8-8s like that until the 90s or so.
Model25FanForever   [Jan 24, 2014 at 02:29 AM]
Yeah theres one more 8-8-8 without a backplate, but I don't think its CGE though its this one. Its still very rare but a CGE makes it special .There are some other plumberized 8-8-8's but they aren't as cool. Theres 4 of them though. First. Second. third and fourth are here.

I know of an 8-8-8 by the airport too.

Thats all the 8-8-8's I know of that are left in the GTA and including the Dixie 8-8-8's.

Nice summary. Interesting, all the back-plated 8-8-8's examples are on Peel Region road intersections. All the back-plateless examples are on City of Brampton Streets in questionable mounting positions.
joe_347V   [Feb 02, 2014 at 02:32 AM]
Interesting, I know of only one backplateless 8-8-8, It has since been retrofitted to LED though.

I know of six 8-8-8s not listed above too, two here, one here, another, and two more here. Interestingly the ones in the last link are Fortran ones instead of CGE. What's also odd about them is the use of a 8-8-8 on the RIGHT hand side of the intersection. Normally even with the a 8-8-8 on the left, the signal on the right would still be a 12-8-8.
Model25FanForever   [Feb 02, 2014 at 02:51 AM]
That Silver Dart. I used to use that road all the time to get to my grandmothers. Those pedestrian signals were Incandescent until they just burned out in 2011. They didn't bother replacing them. I haven't gone by there in at least 2 years but I don't know if the pedestrian signals are used there anymore.

Dixie is pretty much where the last of the 8-8-8's are. Except for the very few such as the Cawthra one and Hurontario one.
joe_347V   [Feb 02, 2014 at 06:49 AM]
Ahh, it seems that while the rest of Mississauga converted to LED in the early 2000s, the signals in that area stayed incandescent until 2012 or so. Didn't know they never bothered to retrofit the pedestrian signals though.

Yeah, it seem that Dixie has the last of the 8-8-8s in the GTA. I know that some of the onramps for QEW Toronto bound in Mississauga still have 8-8-8s too.

It's been a while since I've seen a incandescent 8-8-8 or a pedestrian signal in the wild though.
Model25FanForever   [Feb 03, 2014 at 02:13 AM]
Yeah in the GTA I don't recall there being any other 8-8-8's left.

The incandescent signals in the GTA are still around except there aren't many left at all really. Crying or Very sad
joe_347V   [Feb 03, 2014 at 05:25 AM]
Yeah, I only know of a dozen or so left. Neutral

This stretch up to Clark Blvd is officially slated to be reconstructed this year.
Model25FanForever   [Jun 23, 2014 at 02:45 AM]
Yeah your right. These are officially coming down sometime this year. I just looked at Peel regions road construction and it distinctly says "Dixie Road from Steeles Avenue to Clark Boulevard – road widening and watermain replacement" Well im going to keep an eye on the Model 25's and the 8-8-8.

I MUST GO CLAIM THE 8-8-8 around July 4th-8th. Orenda to steeles is closed during that time for the temporary signals.
m@   [Jun 23, 2014 at 04:04 PM]
Woah, I read about the regional construction update in the local paper. When I check the construction section of the region's site, I see no listing for Dixie, May I ask where you found this? You found that lighting spec manual pretty easily apparently too!
Model25FanForever   [Jun 23, 2014 at 05:20 PM]
Its on the peel region site. I don't know how to shorten the link. Its under peels 2014 road construction and then theres a link near the top that says "Details of the 2014 projects and timing are now available online:" and then go to the link right underneath.
joe_347V   [Jun 23, 2014 at 06:43 PM]
Oh, yeah road construction usually means the 8-8-8 will be coming down. I hope you're able to save it too. See if you can find out which contractor is responsible for taking the signals down. My guess is probably Guild or Stacey since they're all over the GTA.
Model25FanForever   [Nov 15, 2014 at 08:04 PM]
A fence line has been established between Clark and Steeles. Temporary Wooden poles behind each polefab. Only a matter of time until they make up their minds and put up temporary traffic lights and streetlights. I find they have problems organizing this project considering they brought temporary signals and poles to this intersection with the 8-8-8 once already. I will try and get photos of what its like now soon.
joe_347V   [Nov 17, 2014 at 01:36 PM]
Ahh, looks like another 8-8-8 will be biting the dust before the end of 2014. Wonder if they might hold off on the removal because of the snow though.
m@   [Nov 17, 2014 at 03:39 PM]
that happened last year lol Laughing
