Preparing for the Hurricane Sandy! PLUS PEPCO RANT!
Yep our brand new generator we can and shall use if [url=http://www.galleryoflights.org/mb/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-3724] "Reliable BGE" [/url] could not resist Sandy....

Generator is STRONGLY ADVISED for the [url=http://www.galleryoflights.org/mb/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-12150] "Unreliable PEPCO" [/url]

How unreliable is PEPCO? [url=http://www.wjla.com/articles/2012/07/pepco-most-hated-company-in-america-comes-under-fire-for-outages-77648.html] See the answer here [/url]

PEPCO is so much disliked there are even groups trying to do something about it such as
-[url=http://www.packuppepco.com/] PACK UP PEPCO! [/url]
-[url=http://wearemoco.org/ai1ec_event/powerupmontco-discussion-with-energy-attorney-stanley-balis/?instance_id=] Powerupmontco [/url]
-[url=http://mocopublicpower.org/] http://mocopublicpower.org/ [/url] (this page stated that PEPCO is Anti-American) <SHOCK!>

Glad I am under BGE, unfortunately Felipe lives about 12-14 poles away from the BGE territory line, causing him to be powered by PEPCO, but fortunately his part of PEPCO seems more reliable than most areas of PEPCO. Sadly my area seems less reliable due to the forest I live in, but BGE action is much quicker to fix!

One of my friends was out of power in PEPCO land for 15 days from our June 29, 2012 Derecho! That is ridiculous!

Pepco sucks! Big time! Mad They took out perfectly good lights to stick some nasties in place.

Nice generator BTW.
GullWhiz   [Oct 29, 2012 at 04:34 PM]
Yet, FGS and family, paid PEPCO, for them to spend on getting HPS!

National Grid is so-so. They fix the area like bigger cities first and sometimes it takes over a week for them to repair lines in rural areas, which is really bad since a lot of rural homes use well water and as we all know, electricity is required for the pumps to work so if they loose power, they loose water too. When Irene hit last year, the president of NGrid was out of town so the power grid went to hell in a handbasket. There was a shortage on man power, funding, and NGrid was in the local media for weeks following Irene because of their poor response to the disaster. Since then I've noticed a lot of group pole renewals as well as premary replacements from traditional crossarm style to "hendrix" style. A big problem was that we have so many old poles from the telegraph era that weren't meant to hold huge transformers and so amny power lines and when tree limbs started falling and powerlines started swaying, the poles snapped like toothpicks. There are also a number of old deteriorating crossarms that snapped in half throwing the primarys everywhere.

cool generator! its higher wattage then mine which is 4KW Cool
GullWhiz   [Oct 29, 2012 at 07:27 PM]
Wow BGE doing a GREAT JOB! before we had 29,033 customers out, but it decreased to 26,765 customers out as of 3:27 PM! BGE ROCKS! PEPCO has already made it clear that they will not be fixing power if the wind is 35 MPH and up.....
streetlight98   [Oct 29, 2012 at 07:40 PM]
The outages in RI are roughly 28,000 for NGrid. I still have power (otherwise couldn't type this lol). Stuff is really blowing around outside but not anything like treelimbs near me falling. NGrid has a similar rule to Pepco. They can't have their workers out in high winds because it poses hazards to them. I think they have a higher wind limit though like 40 or 45...

Here NGrid uses automatically resetting pole breakers (are they what all utilitys use???) so the most annoying thing is when the power goes off for five seconds then comes back on for a few seconds, shuts off, comes on, shuts off, comes on, etc. It just went off a second ago but didn't go off again thankfully. a couple wire must've touched or something...
GullWhiz   [Oct 29, 2012 at 08:00 PM]
Even if I lost power, I would still be able to type....using my Smartphone! Anyway lights here are flickering VERY slightly....very slightly...haven't gone off or shown any signs of really serious brownouts yet...
streetlight98   [Oct 29, 2012 at 08:02 PM]
Yeah no smartphone for me hehe. Stay safe Jace! The hurricane is a ways away from here and we're getting 50MPH winds inland and up to 70MPH gusts along the coast so i can only imagine what's going on in MD!
GullWhiz   [Oct 29, 2012 at 08:09 PM]
Yeah, Michael, stay safe too! We still have power so far...I will announce once we lose it...right here
SeanB~1   [Oct 29, 2012 at 08:13 PM]
That 50MPH wind was like that today, but it is just raining now.......... Been dodging the roof of the next door building at work, as it is busy breaking off, lost gutters and bargeboards so far, and a few loose sheets of roof busy trying to walk off. Luckily wind dies down after a few hours, and tomorrow they will nail it back down till whenever........

I only have a small 650Va genset, will do fridges, computer and a light fine. Cold shower, and gas cooker works well.

Jace needs a lot more 2 stroke oil if that is all he has, and a lot more gas as well. If the power is out he will have to nick fuel from the car to run the genset.......
streetlight98   [Oct 29, 2012 at 08:28 PM]
We don't have a generator so if the power is out for more than 24 hours, the perishable goods will have to go. We have a gas hot water heater so i believe we'll still have hot water though we wouldn't have heat, A/C, dishwasher, stove, washer, dryer, etc. as they all use electricity. We'd still have light since I have enough battery powered lights to go around. Laughing
FGS   [Oct 29, 2012 at 09:54 PM]
That's a fuel stabilizer. The GP5500 is four stroke. So I am sure he'll be fine. He can get gas from his car if needed. Razz

As for power here. It has been flickering slightly. Not long enough to cause the TV and computers to shut down. If he says I lost power means I lost power. I don't have a smartphone. Has no need for one.
GullWhiz   [Oct 29, 2012 at 10:03 PM]
Yes Felipe will contact me if he loses power!!!
FGS   [Oct 29, 2012 at 10:11 PM]
Don't hold your breath. Will be a while before that happens. Razz
joe_347V   [Oct 29, 2012 at 10:13 PM]
Well, it seems that the Toronto area will get the remnants of Sandy around evening-overnight. Stay safe you guys.

I don't think we're going to lose power but if I do, I'll update using my phone.
streetlight98   [Oct 29, 2012 at 10:17 PM]
hmm. haven't lost power yet but the radio signal is horrendous and the radio station is the next city over. Shocked TV picture is occasionally a bit weird too and sometimes the sound goes out. the radio signal is getting worse and worse as i type this and the wind is picking up speed quickly. I opened my window to see (my window is covered in rain) and the wind was very strong. The air pressure became instanty stronger in my room! It actually looks liek the clouds are thinning though...
gramirez2012   [Oct 29, 2012 at 10:24 PM]
ComEd sent a ton of crews to assist BGE.
GullWhiz   [Oct 29, 2012 at 10:29 PM]
Did you know that ComEd is owned by the same company that owns BGE?
gramirez2012   [Oct 29, 2012 at 10:30 PM]
Yep!
FGS   [Oct 29, 2012 at 10:45 PM]
BGE don't need those extra crews. Pepco desperately need them. And BGE need to buy out Pepco and fix their messes.
