Yuck, I take it you caught the crews replacing the lights? Did you get any of the old lights?
tpirman1982   [Jan 28, 2012 at 08:42 PM]
No, sorry. I no longer have the room in my display. Besides, the ones being replaced were 150w HPS Cooper OVX luminaires. Not classic-esque ones like I grew up with back in Roslindale.
I talked to the electricians and I asked if I could take some pics of this to show the detail up close. Besides, it may not be MV, but I like LEDs.
gailgrove   [Jan 28, 2012 at 08:45 PM]
Like them? Those lights that look ugly and are replacing and scrapping 100s of thousands of classic lights?
tpirman1982   [Jan 28, 2012 at 08:49 PM]
Well, LEDs are nice to me 'cause they save energy, which is why I made this one as an exception to me. Besides, the HPS luminaires in my area are not classic. The orange glow in High Pressure Sodium doesn't appeal to me. I'm nuts for Mercury Vapor and LED.
gailgrove   [Jan 28, 2012 at 08:54 PM]
Just because it's HPS does NOT mean it is not classic, sure the OVX is not but many are. And I would much rather have a HID light over any type of solid state lighting. And saving a little bit of energy is not worth it for the cost of these.

Well, I can't argue with HID. As long as it isn't High Pressure Sodium. I prefer anything that is not High Pressure Sodium, even if it's LED. The white glow of LED at night makes me feel at peace when I get the chance to go on those night scene specials in Hyde Park like I did on Christmas eve 2011. I blame myself for enjoying LED.

I really think LED technology is bad for high power lighting, many they put in here have failed, I've seen a few good installations but its hard to say how good/bad they are, the light quality is great tho! I prefer the reliability of HID tho
And lighting is only 20% of all electricity used!
joe_347V   [Jan 28, 2012 at 09:29 PM]
Vaughan is partially LED and I have to say some have already failed and some are dayburning, those have been used for only more than a year, so Rolling Eyes .

What kind of LEDs are in Vaughan? Philips Hadco? BetaLED like these or what?

tpirman1982   [Jan 28, 2012 at 10:24 PM]
Wow. I've never seen that before.
gramirez2012   [Jan 28, 2012 at 10:41 PM]
Looks like a fluorescent ballast. A suburb near me has been testing different LED street lights for a couple years now. The light output looks nice, but I doubt they'll survive many years of extreme cold in the winter and blazing heat in the summer. The City of Chicago is installing CMH cobraheads now, which look nice. The color of the light output is pretty inconsistent, though. I'm sure they'll last much longer than any LED's currently on the market.
gailgrove   [Jan 28, 2012 at 10:45 PM]
Plus CMH can easily be repaired, LED cannot, you must replace the fixture when it goes bad. Rolling Eyes
tpirman1982   [Jan 28, 2012 at 10:48 PM]
Well, I wonder how long these Philips Hadco RX1s will live since LEDs have longer average rated lives than HID bulbs.
gailgrove   [Jan 28, 2012 at 10:53 PM]
Well nowhere near as long as they are rated to last, many Westinghouse Lifeguard lamps would of lasted much longer than these. The thing is with a mercury or HPS fixture you can screw in a new lamp and your back in business, with a LED you must replace the whole fixture... Confused
joe_347V   [Jan 28, 2012 at 11:00 PM]
And plus if the electronic driver in them is anything like those electronic fluorescent ballasts, the driver will blow long before the rated lives that are slapped on to these.

HID is still more reliable imo, and plus the reliability of MV and to a lesser extent HPS has been proven in the real world, where as the rated lives for LED fixtures are still theoretical.
streetlight98   [Jan 29, 2012 at 10:11 PM]
These should last the winter fine- it's the heat that kills these...
Antstar85   [Jan 29, 2012 at 10:18 PM]
They do make replacement LED sticks for fixtures. Also if a HID fixtures fails you usually replace the whole fixture. Wink
joe_347V   [Jan 29, 2012 at 10:33 PM]
They still haven't been really tested for the long term though. Confused
tpirman1982   [Jan 29, 2012 at 10:41 PM]
streetlight98, I've seen these Philips Hadco RX1s during Boston commutes last summer and they're just fine.
