Cooper UCD Small Shoebox
[url=https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/102661519/Lighting/GoL_Pics/Extra%20Pics/COL_IMG_9700_L.JPG]Full Size Collage[/url]

Here's a NOS Cooper UCD shoebox light I found at Restore. They said they didn't test it but since it was brand new I decided to buy it anyways. Ballast inside is a 120/240v CWI with the famous Cooper Cube ignitor. It came with a Holophane drop lens that looks similar to what my R47 used. The PC socket is similar to the old Westy style with the separate plastic ring that clamps the socket in. Unlike most shoeboxes which bolt on a tenon mount, this one has a real 4 bolt slipfitter and so can mount on any regular arm.

Interestingly the door is actually welded sheet aluminium instead of cast aluminium, the top housing is cast though. It didn't come with a lamp or a PC so I stuck in a NOS Sylvania HPS from 1992 and used a taped up PC to fire it up. It didn't come with a NEMA tag so I might slap one of mine on. Luckily I have a spare 7HPS tag. I also added a ground lug when I was wiring it up too as it didn't come with a ground terminal. I think most streetlights are like that though.

The Cooper UCD is commonly used here as path lights and in some residential streets.

cool! I was exactly -2 when this was built!
joe_347V   [Aug 18, 2013 at 12:58 AM]
Thanks! I was turning 4 when this light was built but the HPS lamp is a few months older than me lol. This is my first brand new streetlight too. I don't think Cooper still makes this model though, I can't seem to find it on their site. I know the light was available in 70, 100, 150w HPS and 175w MV though.

Also it seems shoeboxes with real slipfitters are kinda uncommon since they mostly mount on a bolt on tenon instead of a arm. Was a bit surprised to see a real streetlight at Restore too. Razz

I think I'll keep this HPS though since all my other lights are MV/MH. Laughing

at a quick glance, I thought this was an OVX. Cool find though Joe!
joe_347V   [Aug 18, 2013 at 02:52 AM]
Thanks Tony! I guess the side view does look sorta like a boxy OVX Laughing . It looks like it can easily be converted for 400w HPS though, the ballast looks like it fits and the lamp fits. Razz

I am not sure if I have ever seen a fixture like this...but we have to admit Cooper makes the most various style of fixtures as of today, using same refractors style...
joe_347V   [Aug 18, 2013 at 04:13 PM]
I wonder if the shoebox with a cobrahead reflector and drop lens was more of a Canadian thing. Do you guys have this style of shoebox in your area?
A_lights   [Aug 18, 2013 at 10:15 PM]
interesting! a mini OVX
Hanging Light   [Aug 18, 2013 at 11:05 PM]
It looks like an OVX! It definitely would look great on a Brampton pathway.
m@   [Aug 18, 2013 at 11:34 PM]
This light is the standard fixture used in all the park paths in Brampton. It gets installed like this, compliments of gailgrove (where is he lately by the way?): http://www.galleryoflights.org/mb/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-10485. Two years ago the usage seems to have only been in spot replacements though. New park path lights don't have a standard fixture of late. Not sure how this ended up in a neighbouring city ReStore.

it seems cobraboxes (well the name fits doesn't it? lol) are more of an Ontario thing but I wish they were more common. I swear in Niaga Falls, ON I saw a Gas station canopy with recessed lights with drop lenses. either AEL 125 lenses or powerlite lenses. my memory might be playing tricks on me though...
joe_347V   [Aug 19, 2013 at 03:45 AM]
Yeah the angled door and refractor makes it look a lot more like a boxy OVX instead of a shoebox. Razz Similar lights were also used on residential streets in Mississauga and Vaughan too. That Restore had a bunch of HID lights for sale for some reason including a posttop similar to what some new subdivisions have along with the similar looking arm mounted coach lantern fixture.

@Matt, I fixed your link above so that it links to the right pic now.

@Mike, yeah it seems none of your guys have as much cobraboxes in your area as me Razz They're pretty unique lights too. Razz I probably would have passed it up if it was a regular FCO shoebox but since it had a drop lens... Very Happy I don't think I've seen a gas station light with a drop lens before though.

Also found the catalogue page for the Cooper UCD too.
streetlight98   [Aug 19, 2013 at 11:06 PM]
I think this was the Gas Station so I was mistaken i guess
BTW, not sure if you have pics of these or have seen them already, but look what i stumbled upon on google maps. O_O
Hanging Light   [Aug 20, 2013 at 02:18 AM]
This is the same one you have Joseph. (...) It was installed about half a year ago, somebody didn't like the old one and smashed it. Sad They are now used for pathway lighting replacements or the box with a glass lens. The new neighborhood pathways have black hexagonal LED's.
joe_347V   [Aug 20, 2013 at 03:39 AM]
@Mike, oh those MH lights used to be quite common in gas stations here, or course many gas stations have switched to LED now. Confused I didn't know of the lot with the OV-20s though Shocked . I'll keep the location in mind so I can grab some pics next time I'm in the area.

@Hanging Light, I guess the gallery blocked your link for some reason. If you PM me the link, I can fix the link for you. I wonder if the Cooper shoebox came with a glass FCO lens. I bet the one I have should fit perfectly though.
streetlight98   [Aug 20, 2013 at 01:44 PM]
Ahh these lights are the most common here for gas station canopy light. these are the 2nd most common HID gas station lights here.

The first type i linked i've seen get retrofitted with these LED panels that are mounted in the empty fixture shell. No more refractor on them though. Sad the retrofit panels are like this

Glad I stumbled upon them then! I was just "flying" over Lundey's Lane and happened to see a parking lot in the corner of the page and noticed cobrahead poles, or so i though. So i went to streetview and was like WHAT! Shocked OV-20s! Very Happy LOL Laughing Looks like the inside of the store has 8ft T12s too. Cool
joe_347V   [Aug 21, 2013 at 05:42 AM]
Hmm, most gas stations here traditionally had these in MH or HPS. The one you linked to was also common along with a round version of the fixture I linked to.

Most LED refits here use BetaLED fixtures mounted in the same spots as the old fixtures. If the old lights were recessed they covered up the square hole with sheet aluminium and then installed the light over the hole.

The 4 lamp 8' T12 fixtures are quite rare here now, most I know of got retrofitted to 4' or 8' T8 or stayed T12 but got delamped to the two outer lamps. Oh and check this lot out too.

This lot on the other hand seems to random types and brands of lights on their poles. I suspect it was all clamshells though.
streetlight98   [Aug 21, 2013 at 05:09 PM]
Hmm I don't recall ever seeing any fluorescent lit canopies unless you count on the sides to backlight the perimeter of the canopy.

Wow. Were those lights individually controlled? I saw some dayburning OV-20s.

And wow again! That's quite a variety! Yeah looks like it was all OV-20s at one point. Seems like they've replaced a few poles due to knockdowns too.
joe_347V   [Aug 22, 2013 at 04:46 AM]
Yeah I only seen pics of a fluorescent lit canopy as outdoor fluorescent lighting was already dieing out when gas stations got canopies. I remember back in the 1990s it was quite common for gas stations here to have no canopies and have either MH or HPS lights over the pumps.

Not sure if the lights are group or individually controlled though.

Yeah some of the poles in the 2nd lot have been replaced and I think there's probably around 10 different fixture models there too. Shocked Some of the poles have cobras but they still have ballast cans on them so I supposed the ballast died and they bypassed the ballast and put a cobrahead up. I'll have to get some pics sometime. Razz
gailgrove   [Aug 23, 2013 at 07:36 PM]
Nice, I've always like these cobra-boxes. Like Matt said they are very common here on pathways in Brampton, they are still getting installed too. I've also seen them in Oakville on residential streets. The reflector is exactly the same as the OVX from what I can see.
joe_347V   [Aug 23, 2013 at 11:48 PM]
Thanks Niall! I also added some weatherstripping on the door since the drop lens was too loose for my liking. Razz
