LOL yeah I'm the same way Devonte. I like coated MH since it reduces glare but coated HPS just seems odd to be too lol. Coated HPS lamps are rare though and especially finding a European one in North America! Nice lamp! Will E40 lamps screw into E39 sockets and vice versa? What about E26 and E27?
Yeah, I rarely see coated HPS too. And I also don't know how this British one ended up at Restore lol. I believe it was a tighter fit but it did screw in to my standard E-39 socket. Same thing for the E-27 lamps. Not sure about the other way around. I suppose I could try since I have a E-40 and a E-27 stashed away lol.
I believe in most cases it was the same as coated MH, to reduce glare and diffuse the light better. They were also used (mostly in Europe) to refit fixtures designed for coated mercs so that the light distribution stayed the same.
Yeah coated lamps would provide the same distribution. The reason MH lamps are more popular coated is from highbays that have a clear lens or no lens on the bottom. Clear Mh lamps are painfully glarey indoors, yet I see the clear MH lamps used more often indoors.
A lot of glare problems would be solved if coated HPS was more commonplace, the hotel I stayed at last night had coated 400W HPS lamps in prismatic highbays over the swimming pool
Ew! They shouldn't even make HPS highbays. All I can say is that i bet it's a tough job fixing the highbays when they're mounted right over the pool lol.
I've seen HPS Highbay's in parking garages, and I generally find it pretty unacceptable for that purpose...like the AutoZone's back in tyler had recessed can lights outside the front store entrance with HPS Lamps that looked about 200/250 Watts.
If someone really wanted to, they could call out HPS as a safety hazard in a pool area because people's tones are distorted. Like if a parent is trying to keep an eye on their kid with green swimtrunks, it's gonna look brown or black under HPS light. I find that HPS doesn't light wet areas too well either. When it's just rained and the roads here are wet, the HPS lights are useless because the light doesn't even show up on the pavement. HPS does very well lighting up the roads in snow though. But it makes the snow look like orange sherbet.
certain places HPS Just shouldn't be used IMO.
