Philips 860w Allstart CMH
Restore find, these CMH lamps are designed as energy saving retrofits for M47 1kW probe start and M141 1kW pulse start ballasts. Even though these run on probe start ballasts the arctube dosen't have a starting probe. I suspect it uses a special fill to allow it to start on a probe start ballast. Unfortunately while the rest of the [url=https://www.platt.com/CutSheets/Philips%20Lighting/42179-2-CutSheet.pdf]AllStart CMH line[/url] is universal burn, the 860w one is vertical burn only so I guess we won't be seeing these in vintage 1kW MV cobras any time soon.

Another interesting thing about this lamp is that it's open rated, you can see the hefty quartz shroud and the wire guard around said shroud. I guess the 1kW lamps get quite err explosive at EOl.

Nice find Joe! Cool That sure has some wire guard in there! Shocked

yeah i heard the higher the wattage, the bigger the ka-boom lol. nice find! One thing I've wondered is if the CMH retrofits even work on Mv becuse probe start MH has a higher OCV than MV and PSMH is even higher i think.

Thanks Darren and Mike! Yeah I think if they end up working on MV, it'll probably be like putting a probe start MH on a MV ballast. Since I only have a 1kW MH ballast, I can't test out if it works on MV though.

Nice find, Joe. Let us know if you can light this one up Smile

Yeah, I'm gonna try lighting it up soon. I just have to dig out my 1kW MH ballast from storage.

nice lamp!....im hoping CMH Becomes a lot more popular! seems to have more potential than the other's.

Thanks, I believe Toronto sometimes uses CMH in their gumballs but aside from that I don't really see CMH streetlights around here. It seems most places around here are going for a full LED refit. Sad

Anymore of these left at the restore? Getting one of these has been one of my goals.

Wait a minute, it just clicked in that this is CMH? Embarrassed Laughing I didn't know CMH existed in 1000W Shocked

@Dave, this was the only one I found.

@Mike, yeah I believe Philips makes a CMH retrofit lamp for all of the MH wattages. They run off probe start ballasts too so I guess you can turn any MH fixture to CMH now. Razz

Do they make cram lamps? Would be really nice if walgreens used these, the GE chromafit CMH lamps work on HPS/PS MH ballasts but not probe start
joe_347V   [Jun 20, 2014 at 04:09 AM]
Looks like they do for the 320w pulse start/400w probe start retrofit lamp. But not for any other wattage.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Aug 28, 2014 at 01:41 AM]
Yeah I wonder if it would be stubborn starting in cold, especially on a MV ballast?
streetlight98   [Aug 28, 2014 at 01:47 AM]
I wonder if it would even light on MV since MV has a lower OCV. Mh lamps strike easier on MV reactors than they do anything else. Reactors give a nice inductive "kick" as Joe M put it, which helps the Mh lamp strike more easily.

I've lit a decently-used 175w GE MultiVapor I have in that Electripak 175w MV yardblaster...I'd had the lamp for two or three years already (It was my first HID lamp actually; I thought it was HPS originally before I joined Lighting Gallery) and it occurred to me it was 175w so one evening I stuck it in my yardblaster light and lo and behold it fired right up! The CCT was warmer, it was brighter, and the CRI was much better than the clear MV I usually have in there but it's currently got one of my two OEM Philips clear MVs that have the rattly ED frame but still (possibly?) have the 'Lifeguard' arc tube.
A_lights   [Aug 28, 2014 at 02:00 AM]
I've seen it done but eventually the lamp won't strike up
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Aug 28, 2014 at 02:03 AM]
For 175w HX MV ballasts? That's my understanding too; as the lamp ages it requires higher OCV than the MV ballast can provide.
