There are two seperate feelings here. At glance, HPS looks awful on snow, but the other feeling is that HPS looks warm in this pic. Now I am all mixed up lol.

well they do make you feel warmer Dave....when I am shivering in my bedroom in bed....I turn on my HPS wallpack...suddenly you feel like there's a fireplace in your room.....I know..but it's true...

By the way notice the streetside casts more light than the house side! and the sides are throwing more light on the road side!

Isn't 150 watts rather high for a light mounted that low on a residential street

In Howard County the streetlights (mostly residential lights) are much more widely spaced. notice how dark the rest of the area is? In my neighborhood we have about 40 houses but only 5 streetlights There is a post top for every 5 houses....(20 houses one side of road and other 20 on other side of road so streetlight is only on one side of the road...) The light doesn't shine on my window and my bedroom is at my front of the house....

The pole is about 15 feet high.Yeah its a bit high wattage, but the lowest HPS wattage BGE (my electrical company) actually offers is 100 watt, with an exception on residential streets in Bowie MD that has 70 watt)

Yeah I guess thats true, here the new residential standard is a 32.5 ft pole with 8 ft tapered E arm and a 70 watt (for small streets) or 150 watt (for larger streets()OVZ or 115, the new neighbourhoods here that get built with decorative lighting are either 100 for most small streets and 150 for the larger roads/intersections, we don't use 100 watt cobra heads though .

We do have 100 watt cobraheads.....in fact most of the low wattage HPS cobraheads and the posttops are 100/150 watt multitap ballasts

Here we use 70, 150, 250 and 400 watt HPS cobras, there are some 100 and 200 watt ones mixed in but they get replaced with 70, 100 and 250 watt ones respectively.

In my area there's tons of 100W HPS cobraheads! Most of them are M250A2s. Several newer residential streets have 150W Sylvania R37, but they are less common. Some recent streets of the past few years are 70W HPS.

So the lowest wattage used is 70W, in some uncommon cases. After it goes to 100W, 150W, 250W and 400W, with 200W HPS having appeared in spot replacement units.

My electrical company uses 100, 150, 250, 400 and 1000 for HPS cobraheads.....Mine also uses MH too as well as they used to use MV

PEPCO uses 70, 100, 150, 250, 400 watt HPS in cobraheads, in 2006, they still offered MV cobraheads like my electrical company also did. Now they don't offer MV and still as far as I have seen does NOT use any MH at all. They only service the wooden powerline pole streetlights. If in PEPCO territory, and using metal poles or private property metal poles, it's up to the county or the owner! PEPCO does provide private area lighting, but as far as I seen, its only and mostly Power Brackets, but sometimes but rarely uses cobraheads on wooden poles!!!!

I am not sure about the other electrical companies in MD

In my neighbourhood we use mostly 100w but I've seen 70w HPS cobras on the smaller streets and 100w to 200w HPS on the bigger streets.

Most older streets here use OV 15s and Powerlite R37s, newer ones use OVZs and 115s. We also have the decorative lighting here but I'm not sure of the wattage, maybe 70w to 100w HPS.

For other lights we use 70, 100, 150, 200, 250, and 400w for cobras and up to 1000w for highmasts.

I wish they would put up some 1KW HPS cobras here, we could use them at some intersections.

The 1000 watt aren't used too often for cobraheads....the only times I see them are as 1000 watt MV replacements on private area lighting, and 1000 watt HPS are highly used in Baltimore City.....they are mounted on 6 foot arms on alumimum poles in areas of Baltimore City....currently using AE 327s...they used to use GE Cobraheads but that is no longer available, so they started using AE 327s...

In Frederick area, I see 1000 watt MH OVL in use....mostly private area lights.....

Haven't seen a lot of 1000w sized cobraheads here, the only ones I've seen were all in parking lots.

We have 50,100,and 250w streetlights for utility owned lights. 400w is availble on request.
