I had the chance to visit Japan recently. Needless to say I had a good time buying and bringing back some of the unique lighting they had. Here's a shot of all the lights and lamps I brought back. I'll post individual pics later.

Rough List:
2x 40w F40T10/5000K
F10T8 5000K
F10T8 7200K
Bunch of 4-8w 5000K T5s
Panasonic F6T5 Striplight
Panasonic F10T8 Striplight
Small size Toshiba LED EXIT sign
A typical power outlet and light switch
Bunch of starters, including the unique to Japan screw in ones.

Panosonic LED bulb
GE 100w incandescents
57w energy saver incandescent
incandescent with a "dancing filament" similar to a GE Bala-Fire bulb
Toshiba 100w BT merc
2x Toshiba 40w merc (fun fact 60% of their streetlighting is /DX MV)

120-100v transformer, technically I can use my variac set to 100v but this lets me run stuff without pulling out the variac.

Whoa Very Happy Japanese version General Electric incandescent light bulb package!

Did you had good time at Japan, Joe?

Wow I guess you are back now? Awesome finds! That medium base ET23.5 MV lamp is really something! Shocked Good grab on the T10s too. Those are hard to find on this side of the globe. The exit sign is sweet too. Might be LED but it's something you don't see here! Very compact looking too!

Thanks! GE is that common of a brand for lighting equipment in Japan so I was a bit surprised to see a pack of them sitting on the shelf. The major brands there are Toshiba, Panasonic/National, Hitachi. Yeah I had a good time in Japan.

Yeah I was only in Japan for a week, that's exactly my reaction when I saw the 100w medium base ET23.5 merc, they also had a 80w version too. Believe it or not, T12s and T10s are more common there than 36wT8s. Although some stores did use LED tubes now.

Yeah the exit sign is pretty neat, it's actually only around 6x6.5" which is much smaller than ours. The newer Canadian exit signs do use the same running man design though, which they borrowed from Japan lol.

Great assortment of lighting goodies you brought back Joe! Which area of Japan did you visit?
joe_347V   [Mar 03, 2017 at 08:05 AM]
Thanks Darren! I was in Tokyo for the first half of my trip and then in the Osaka area (Kobe, Kyoto, Sanommiya, Akashi) for the second half.

Nice, sounds like you got to see quite a few places in a week.

I thought Japan mostly used clear mercs. Are the 40w ones normally used in streetlighting?
joe_347V   [Mar 27, 2017 at 01:47 AM]
I saw some 400w clear mercs in Shinjuku, Toyko but it seemed most of the mercs there are now /DX. I don't think the 40w ones were used in streetlight. I think 80w was the lowest used for streetlighting. The residential streets actually used 2xF18T8 preheat fixtures mounted at around 15'.
