Aggh! Now WHY did this R47 get replaced? It was working the night before and NOTHING was wrong with it, this is starting to get me really annoyed, the contractor here seems to replace older fixtures more than 2/3 of the time when they are reported as cycling or out, even when they just need a new lamp... Here the fixture (R47) got replaced when it was still working the night before... This is starting to make me not even want to report older lights that are out or cycling in fear they will be replaced, at least they might have a chance at the next group relamping. Rolling Eyes Here they go again, at least it's still a drop lens. Over here they replace with FCO instead. Confused

I actually learned something new recently after being with a lineman on duty......

He was checking a GE Salem Posttop that was reported CYCLING....well after he looked into it....he found he had to replace it....he replaced it with an AE Series ARD

Now why did he replace it even though it worked? Because the ballast was blackened and was probably going to burn out eventually...I saw the ballast myself 1/3 of the windings were black and some were dark copper...and rest regular copper.....so...that may be one of the reasons..

That sucks. I thought they were wasteful here. I see it's one of those wonderful two-headed intersections too. Razz At least the other R47 is left.

It's better to replace a fixture when the ballast has black stuff on it since that means the ballast will fail soon.

If that is the case, sure, but I doubt it was, and don't forget about this. They replaced two R47 just down the road from this one, they were cycling and I doubt both were bad. They seem to frequently replace anything that isn't a 115, OVZ, OVX or 125 - in other words Powerlites, Crouse-Hinds, AEs and Westinghouses. I'm sure they aren't all bad either, in fact they are often quite new fixtures, I'd say the R47 that was here before was only from around 1996 or so.

They do the random replacements occasionally here too, usually if they have to renew the pole. I'm not sure if they replace lumes that can be relamped here though...I hope that Westy OV 15 on my street that started cycling a week ago dosen't get replaced. Sad
