New York City Electro-Mechanical Signal Controller
Here, is a G.T.E. (General Traffic Equipment) model B-3/Marbelite M-30 electro-mechanical signal controller in Manhattan, New York.

Aside from Marbelite E/M signal controller equipment, G.T.E. E/M signal controller equipment was once used in New York City as well. G.T.E. and Marbelite parts are interchangeable, therefore, they are compatible with each other.

General Traffic Equipment first began to manufacture electro-mechanical signal controllers in 1984, and they continue manufacture parts. The only company known to still manufacture them.

They first began to appear on the streets of N.Y.C. in probably the late 1980s or early 1990s. They were used at new installations prior to when the city officially converted from E/M signal controllers to computerized signal controllers in 2005 or so.

What's that blue box on the bottom for?

The "blue box" is a computer system that is wired to the actual signal controller itself. It is what controls the dial timer, and, therefore, the dial timer does not operate on its own. Normally, a dial timer in an E/M signal controller has only one signalized intersection time plan. Now, on the other hand, the computer system has multiple signalized intersection time plans built into it, which is as a result benefical to the E/M signal controller itself. It's actually controlled by the "main computer" that is probably located at New York City Department of Transportation's headquarters in lower Manhattan. If the computer system were to lose its connection with the "main computer," the dial timer would then take over. Therefore, it would operate on its own.

Many E/M signal controllers in New York City are controlled by these rather sophisticated computer systems.

They share other special features as well, such as interconnection (which is also used), preemption, and vehicle and pedestrian detection.

Cool! I take it you work for the NYCDOT?
M30   [Mar 25, 2012 at 09:01 PM]
No, I don't work for N.Y.C.D.O.T.
gailgrove   [Mar 25, 2012 at 09:01 PM]
Oh, then how do you have access to the traffic signal cabinets?

Keep in mind that I did not take this picture. I obtained this picture from Flickr several months ago. I don't know who took this picture.

Although since I own two N.Y.C. E/M signal controllers in my private collection, I have the right key to open any lock on any E/M signal controller cabinet that is still in existence in New York City.
