M-250A with a chipped front housing
I noticed the other day on a walk around the neighborhood. this light is at the end of a dead end street near my house and the last I knew, it still worked. It looks like the chip is alowing water to get inside the fixture.

Sad to see the M-250A in this condition, but I'm glad it works and is still in service. Smile An M-250A is almost at the top of my wanted list right now. Fortunatly, NGrid still relamps the remaining 100w mercs around here. any other wattage merc seems to get replaced though. Once NGrid runs out of merc lamps they'll probably start replacing instead of relamping. Sad Occasionally a merc is replaced for no apparent reason though. One of the FCO M-250A2 100w mercs here got replaced by a 50w HPS M-250R2 a few weeks back. The M-250a2 was relamped with a nice bright GE merc a month before too. Mad The dimmed out and dayburnign A2 on the next poel was left alone thoguh. Neutral

We Are now in the process of taking out all remaining Mercs in NU territory. Mad

Uggg. That really sucks. Mad Crying or Very sad NGrid just relamped the 100w M-250R in front of my grandparents' house in Pawtucket a week ago after months of emailing them. The lamp put out no more than the shine of a flashlight and it was too difficult for my grandmother to see as almost no light reached the ground. It got a new lamp, PC, and a new Formed Plastics refractor to replace the slightly yellowed refractor. It was no way near as yellow as this; it was still clear, just with a tint of yellow. The old PC has had the lamp coming on at least an hour or so before sunset and off about an hour after sunrise since I was a little kid too. It now has a deep brown PC. What voltage is a brown PC?
Antstar85   [Dec 28, 2011 at 07:27 PM]
could be a multi volt PC. alot of the old mercs were 240 so its quite possible it got a Multi volt PC. we use black here at NU but on any 240 volt lights, we use Blue.
streetlight98   [Dec 28, 2011 at 07:36 PM]
The old PC looked like the one above. Most likely it's 240v, but I'll have to take a look at how many leads are headed up the cantilever arm.... There's 3 lead wires for 240v and two for 120v, right? NGrid uses pretty any PC they can get a good deal on. Soem fixtures have brown PCs while some have those gray Fisher Peirce SunTech PCs. The next time I stay overnight there I'll get a pic and check closer at the leads and PC. I wasn't wearign my glasses the last time I was there, so the M-250R was a bit blurry for me to see clearly. Here's the M-250R before it was relamped. you can see the older PC and the fixture even though it's blurry...

Most of the time yes, 3 for 240 and 2 for 120.

*UPDATE* The Mrs. and I went out for a walk earlier and yes this light is still working!

Sad fixture.

At least you still HAVE MV in your area. xD I have MV in my area because my local utility only likes to use MV up to this day.

But this light won't see much longer, soon it will be replaced, probably with an LED.

And.. Is the NEMA tag upside down?
streetlight98   [Dec 29, 2011 at 04:16 PM]
Yeah. The tag is also not metallic, so the power module was likely replaced when they converted to HPS.
Antstar85   [Dec 29, 2011 at 05:00 PM]
That is actually a metallic tag. All these models have metallic tags and for some reason about half of them are upside down like this. These are the original HPS lights installed when HG&E Switched to HPS.
gailgrove   [Dec 29, 2011 at 06:28 PM]
I guess this light will get replaced next time it is relamped, I wonder how exactly it happened? I don't know that I would say the tag is "upside down" but it is facing the opposite direction of what they usually do, actually many Powerlites had the tags face that way.
streetlight98   [Dec 29, 2011 at 07:08 PM]
The GE logo has always been upside-down until recently on all of their cobrahead's refractor doors.
Antstar85   [Dec 29, 2011 at 08:09 PM]
This light might have a shot at being relamped and staying in service. I've seen HG&E giving powr/door lights the tape job if the fixture still working. Now as for being replaced with a LED, that also is very likely since they are appearing like dirt here now.
mercuryvaporrocks   [Jan 19, 2012 at 12:59 PM]
Duquesne Light has alot of M-250A's in their area, they would replace a fixture if it was in this condition.
streetlight98   [Jan 19, 2012 at 08:28 PM]
If this was reported in NGrid territory, it would be replaced too. We have only MV M-250As here though and even those are rare.
Antstar85   [Feb 17, 2012 at 11:00 PM]
Well I have bad news. This light has been replaced to a LEOTEK GC1-20c LED streetlight, It's over for me now in this city, evrey fixture in my entire neighborhood is LED now.

You should put up a HPS light in your yard just to make sure that "classic" HPS ambiance is still there. Laughing
Antstar85   [Feb 17, 2012 at 11:04 PM]
I could but I love the white light, I should put My OVG back up to protest the changout! Laughing
