Cree 9W LED
Found this at my local HD today for $15 (cheaper than the AmbientLED equivalent), it's the newly released Cree LED lamp. There were only two choices available at HD though, the 5000K 9W one shown in the pic, and a 2700K 6w one.

These seem to have a more even and incandescent like distribution compared to the Philips LEDs. The smaller heatsink and centre placement of the LEDs mean that the socket side is lit too.

Interestingly, instead of a plastic globe, this uses a silicone coated shatter resistant glass globe like on the shatter-r-guard GE fluorescents.

It's also dimmable but it didn't dim that far on the old style incandescent dimmer I tested it with. I think my LED/CFL dimmer might dim it better.

vaporeyes   [Apr 17, 2013 at 04:08 AM]
My house was built in 1988, which is perfect as that is the period of time when I started my lighting hobby and bought my first fixtures & lamps. I have a good number of magnetic rapid-start F40 fluorescents in the house, particularly in the garage. There are 40 lamps in use throughout my house that are ignited using glowbottle starters - these are linear, circline and compact fluorescents on preheat ballasts. The only standard incandescents are the appliance lamps in the oven & lava lamp and a few low-voltage ones plus a 300w one in a teardrop streetlight in the garage; dining room is halogen and LED only (no fluorescents); the rest of the house (almost every room) is fluorescent, CFL and HID. Outdoor lighting is almost all HID except for LED & halogen landscape lights and one PL fluorescent. There are working streetlight fixtures in the garage, living room, bedroom closet and backyard Smile

I bought the Cree daylight version of this bulb Joe. I can't stand the eerie colour temperature, i'm gonna try to take it back. Hopefully the soft white isn't as yellow as an incandescent, I want a really neutral LED bulb!
joe_347V   [Apr 30, 2013 at 12:00 AM]
Hmm, the Philips 10.5w 3500K (at HD for $15 each) is also 800 lumens and gives off a pretty neutral light. It's not dimmable though.

Unfortunately I think the Philips AmbientLED and the Cree soft white is pretty yellow, similar to a incandescent.
Silverliner14B   [May 17, 2013 at 06:06 AM]
those cree leds have issues with color shift and 120hz flicker. they were rushed to market i think. cree claims they are on a mission to drive 100% adoption of leds but i get the impression they really know how to ruin leds lol.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Jun 26, 2013 at 03:20 AM]
I personally really like CREE products and for me me 120Hz flicker isn't an issue (now 60Hz is). Personally I'd get the 5000K version.
These are on display at my local HD (Atascadero, CA) in 6w 2700K, 9w 2700K, and 9w 5000K versions.
FGS   [Jun 26, 2013 at 03:28 AM]
I got both the 5000K and the 2700K. Both 9.5w each. The 5000K one is kinda weird seeing the "filament" but in daylight color!
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Jun 26, 2013 at 04:28 AM]
Joseph, in your list you mentioned an illuminated ceiling in the kitchen in your house, is it one of those 80s setups with the slightly lower ceiling in the kitchen and fluorescent fixtures above acrylic translucent panels that can be lifted up/slid back like in a suspended ceiling to access the fixtures for relamping? My house here in California has a setup like that...I'll post a pic on LG sometime.
joe_347V   [Jun 26, 2013 at 05:15 AM]
I might have to try out the 2700K version too, I wonder how it looks in my traffic lights.

The illuminated ceiling is the exact same as those 70s-80s style setup....

joe_347V   [Jun 27, 2013 at 04:06 AM]
