Overview of the Garage
Yes, very cluttered. I had to trailblaze my way to the lights lol. The one in the back corner was the strobing one, the one to the left was the one with 1 good lamp, the one above the pic is the T8 shoplite, and the one not shown is the one with the broken pullchain switch. The T8 isn't any brighter, probably due to the fact that these preheaters don't underdrive lamps like RS ballasts typically do... The T8 is instant start and runs a pair of 32W Altos

Is that a wood-burning cookstove or is it oil?
Is that one of those LOA capacitive shoplights above the workbench (that isn't turned on)?
I also spy the older white Essex romex I think. Now #12 (which I'm assuming this is) is yellow.
How old is the house?
streetlight98   [Oct 16, 2012 at 12:31 AM]
not sure...
yeah that's an LOS shoplite. the new light i have (pictured standing upright near the left margin) was replaced by that thing. It had two T12 CW altos... Not sure of the age of the hosue but i think the garage is 1960s...
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Oct 16, 2012 at 12:35 AM]
Oh, are they 40w lamps or 34w? Was 1 F40T12 not bright enough?
streetlight98   [Oct 16, 2012 at 01:27 AM]
They're 40W tubes. I guess one lamp wasn't enough... I'll never know though since i can't ask him. Neutral The light i have now had the cord cut and it had no ground, so it's definetly old...

And I'm guessing it had a non-polarized plug?
So did your cousin's family inherit the house I'm guessing? Or is he still around but not really "there"?
streetlight98   [Oct 16, 2012 at 11:37 PM]
it had to have had a polarized plug otherwise the ballast would fry. There was no ground wire though.

My aunt and uncle built their house onto my aunt's parents' house. Their house is from 2006-ish and this house is probably over 100 years old. The garage was built in the 60s i think... The lights were added at the time of the garage being built but they were NOS from his workplace. My aunt, uncle, and three cousins live in their half of the double- house and my aunt's mom lives in here half which is connected to this garage.

Cool, does it look new-old from the outside?
streetlight98   [Dec 02, 2012 at 12:45 AM]
Hey Guys, is this bad news: The light to the left (the one that had one good and one bad lamp) glows a few seconds after shutting it off. When you shut the switch off, it goes off then flickers dimly for a couple seconds and goe out. and this is AFTER power is cut to the light. The other two preheaters and the IS shoplite behaive normally.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Dec 02, 2012 at 12:53 AM]
I don't know...but I would guess there's a capacitor in the ballast discharging or there is extreme after-glow in the phosphor of those tubes...can you get a video of it doing that? Then we might be able to diagnose what it's doing.
streetlight98   [Dec 02, 2012 at 12:58 AM]
is definetly not the phosphors. it blinks wildly but its dim and the fixture is off. i guess maybe a capacitor is leaking a discharge liek you said? i tried a video but it came out crappy so i deleted it. I can try again the next time i see them but it might not be for a while.

Were the lamps EOL? I've messed with my preheat fixtures and they will do something just like what you descried. .try new lamp and starter
joe_347V   [Dec 02, 2012 at 03:12 AM]
If you need starters for cheap, I think Lowe's was clearing out their 10 packs recently (at least in Toronto).
streetlight98   [Dec 02, 2012 at 05:03 PM]
All the lamps and starters were replaced except for the one that's problematic. It has one new Sylvania lamp and HN starter and the other side has a 1990s-ish looking Sylvania WorkShop lamp and Hubbell starter that still work.

The Lowe's stores near me don't even sell starters! Sad Or at least not that I'm aware of... Are they with the fluorescent ballasts? If so, no they don't sell them here. HD sells them for $1.17 for a 2-pack. It's no big deal. I was just a bit concerned about the flickering after power is cut since i don't want to hurt the fixture if I'll be getting it since I doubt I'll ever come accross a preheat two-lamp ballast in mint condition. I can only imagine what state the cloth wires inside are. I don't actually know if they're cloth, but odds are that they are since these fixtures are either 50s or 60s vintage.

BTW, the preheaters were actualy installed NOS. They were leftovers from my cousin's grandpa's work. I had to know for sure from his wife (my cousins' grandma) since I was a tad confused on how these actually got here. They look like the white inner side of the reflector was repainted at one time or another and it looks very sloppy too lol.

My Lowe's has the starters with the fluorescent ballasts in 10 packs which I don't get because preheaters are as rare as a MV in Toronto.

Anyways the only place I've seen that has a real Tulamp ballast for sale is eBay for around 33 but I guess a couple of single lampers could work in a pinch.
streetlight98   [Dec 02, 2012 at 06:13 PM]
The only place I've seen preheat here is in my house or a family memeber's house. Laughing
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Dec 02, 2012 at 06:24 PM]
For me it's preheat F15T8 undercabinent lights, 22w preheat circline adapters, or the occasional preheat F20T12 strip. Then of course there's manual preheat blacklights and desk lamps. I've never seen any preheat florescent over 22w in person.
This looks kinda like my garage though, pretty cluttered!
I would try to get these someday if I were you, especially since the fixtures and lamps to replace them are already though.
streetlight98   [Apr 04, 2016 at 10:20 PM]
These all still work, but the one in the back corner has SEVERE paint peeling issues on the inside of the reflector. Wonder how it got like that!
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Apr 05, 2016 at 01:46 AM]
Moisture and UV most likely...
