Inside the 16 inch countdown pedestrian signal
Here's the interior of the countdown signal. Very basic here, everything is self contained in the LED module mounted to the door. There is a hole on the module with several dip switches in it so I can select different modes for the signal. The inside of the housing has a simple 3 position terminal strip that connects the walk, don't walk, and neutral leads from the LED module to the field wiring going to splice box, then to the cabinet.

What are the different modes?
basilicon89   [Feb 05, 2011 at 06:39 PM]
My model only has a few modes
Counting in clearance (flashing don't walk)
Shut off Counting timer
Test counter (displays 88 steadily to check each segment)

Other countdown pedestrian signals have modes like
Count down during walk (not allowed by the MUTCD)
Flash the numbers while flashing the hand in clearance
Display and hold 0 instead of darking the numbers on solid hand
Test each segment one by one

Those are all the modes i can think of other than the original design...counting during clearance (flashing hand)

We have Dialite countdown peds.

Dialight stuff is what we use here as well. A few are GE GT1. This brand is Quixote (pronounced kee ho tee)

Hmm I've always thought additional wiring was needed for a countdown.
basilicon89   [Feb 06, 2011 at 01:38 AM]
nope. all self contained.

Now on countdowns that are in a seperate section (like top and bottom 12 inch sections) the seperate countdown module has 3 wires, and the seperate hand/man module has 3 wires. And you simply tie both oranges together for counting in flashing, tie both blues together to count in walk, and obviously tie all neutrals.

Thanks, How does the countdown know how much time is left though?
basilicon89   [Feb 06, 2011 at 03:06 AM]
The countdown is able to learn the length of the flashing hand by counting the amount of seconds the hand is flashing. The very first cycle the counter is dark (it's learning) then every cycle after it displays the numbers. If I happen to retime the signals at the controller cabinet. The counter goes dark again while it learns the new times. Very high-tech unit the counting memory is all self contained in the LED module.

Wow that's really cool!

Wow, Thanks for the explanation.
