Brownie points
General Electric M400A with traffic camera in Berkeley, California. While I am neither fond of the brown paint or it being 200w HPS, it's still one of my favourite luminaires, and I'm sure its days are numbered with LEDs creeping into the area.

Is that some sort of external bird guard?

A good looking one too, it blends in good with the cobra.

That thing is used to make the fixture look flush with the arm, but it sure also blocks entrance to the inside of the fixture. I'm originally from Berkeley and I remember these M-400As as 400w MV.

Sort of an old pic now but I wouldn't mind the brown paint as much if it was gloss... Gloss black would look better though (if not the nice original gray paint!)

This will be replaced by LED this coming summer, Berkeley is soon going to do a citywide changeout.

I wonder if they'll paint the new light matte brown. Afterall, the LED fixture will most definitly be a piece of $h!t so why not let it show its true colors? Razz Laughing

Laughing I bet you it'll be the boring LED grey Razz . Yet another reason why I don't like them, they killed off all the silver lights here and replaced them with grey.

Anyway, I think it'll end up looking odd if they keep that bird guard thing when they put in LEDs.

wonder if it was originally a Glossy Finnish?
streetlight98   [Oct 03, 2017 at 12:13 AM]
The OEM paint would have been glossy (maybe this was too) but this was repainted, looking at the poorly-cut NEMA tag. They didn't mask it off apparently. At least they didn't completely paint over it lol. I've seen that before. Laughing

What's wrong with 200w HPS?
xmaslightguy   [Oct 07, 2017 at 04:50 AM]
I kinda like the brown.

Either way, its still a nice old light Smile

Nice light infested by a parasite. Smile

Berkeley, CA has since switched out to LED, so the one above is gone now.

I wonder if they used brown LED fixtures. I get excited now if I see an HPS miss-out, particularly a fixture with a drop lens. Almost everything in the Seattle area is LED now.
streetlight98   [Oct 15, 2017 at 12:24 AM]
Yeah I enjoy seeing HPS missouts too. There are several of them around here. Most are left because of their proximity to high-voltage powerlines, so I guess not "missouts" per se but still remaining long after the others nonetheless.

New Kensington, PA had most of their street lights converted to LED's as well. There were 9 1000 watt mercury vapor street lights that were spared though as well as a 1000 watt metal halide street light.
