Gumball Head - New Socket Assembly
Well, after getting the old socket out of my gumball it seems that it has been stuck by lightning at some point as some of the original brass screws on the socket had melted. I still have the original socket assembly though.

Since getting a new socket assembly would probably be next to impossible I decided to make a new socket assembly for it using off the shelf parts. I used a standard mogul socket and attached it in the head using a custom bracket made from strip aluminium. I also added in a new terminal block and a ground lug. The lamp is a 200w mogul based frosted Duro-Test I found at Restore.

Nice and clean, I like that! But wouldn't steel be a better choice for a bracket?

I like it! I don't think it makes too much of a difference seeing how it's only holding the socket... Steel is a lot harder to bend/drill than aluminum. Neutral

Depends how thick... under 1/16" it makes quite a difference! I've used 20 gauge sheet metal for starter socket mounting brackets and other little pieces of hardware, aluminium would bend too easily so I used steel...

good point... I was thinking of thicker metal i guess... I don't have much sheet metal experience. (well, none really besides making boats out of aluminum Reynold's Wrap as a kid. Laughing )

Thanks everyone! As for the bracket I used 1/16" aluminium instead of steel mainly because it's easier to cut, drill, and bend and compared to steel.
