Fused Disconnect Switch
We cleaned up the shop in my construction class today and here's what I brought home! It's an NOS Cutler-Hammer 30A 120/240V fused disconnect switch from August 1983 (date code 838) I'll need to get a pair of 30A fuses for this (the long linear kind) when I put this into use sometime in the distant future.

lol thats like 200A. Laughing i think i'll stick to 100 and 175W MV fixtures but the 50000 high mast will be for show.

Nice find! Those normally cost 50 bucks at the hardware store.

Are cartridge-fuse disconnect switches like these still made? I'm putting mine to use probably today to fix...well...check the off topic thread in 'Forum games' Laughing

Yeah I was wondering that too, do these still use fuses or do these use breakers now? Or is there an option for either one? I was expecting to see screw-in fuses to be honest.

I'm not sure but I was thinking a 30A breaker is much more compact! I'm putting mine into use though since I'm redoing my generator feed after a plug shorted and arced last night.

Breakers are more compact but I wouldn't recommend using breakers as primary switching devices. They're not meant to be switched on an off all the time. You'd probably wear them out much faster by using them as the primary switching device.

Yeah I agree, though I have a few cases of loads being controlled by flipping the breaker on and off, including my other generator. I think this will be better for being switched on and off at least once or twice a day.

yeah plus who doesn't love those huge loud disconnect switches. Very Happy I love these things. There was one at the restore last time I was there. If it's still there maybe I'll buy it. Smile it was used but still probably good...

I love their SNAP! too! Buy it if it's there still!
joe_347V   [Sep 15, 2014 at 06:01 AM]
They still make these fused disconnects. I've seen a smaller 30A one that uses screw in fuses but I think the ones that use cartridge fuses are still made.

I also like the older light switches which had a pronounced snap to them. Razz
streetlight98   [Sep 15, 2014 at 10:26 AM]
yeah the older toggle switches are cool too!

Same here, I like the SNAP! light switches a lot. Some of mine snap if you let them (90s-2000s Eagle switches) but I have one that is some other/vintage make that always snaps even when operated slowly or gingerly and I love it!
