Inisdes of the Exit Sign
I know somebody will want a shot lol. I'd be curious too since i've nevr seen the inside of battery back-up exit sign either. Looks complicated lol. I didn't connect the slip-on ballast connectors in order to disable the battery backup. I won't fry the circut bord, will I? The little "ballast" in there converts either 120V or 277V to I think 11V.

Hmm looks similar to mine except for that mine has emergency lights too and is also LED. Interesting that yours has a separate transformer, mine is integrated on the circuit board. To play it safe you could always just connect the line directly to the two sockets and bypass the transformer circuit board if the lamps are 120v lamps.

Oh and here's a fun fact, most exit signs overseas use fluorescent lamps and those have emergency ballasts inside, interestingly most signs overseas use Ni-Cad batteries while ours usually use a sealed lead acid battery.

Ahh okay I'll disconenct the transformer (which also disconencts the circut board). Do they still make incandescent and PL exit signs or is all LEDs now? Yeah this one's a sealed lead acid battery with spades for slip-on wire connections. The battery wires are the red wire and the black wire tucked away near the circut board. Boy it is so crammed in there. I was thinking of taking the battery out and storing it with the extra hardware in the box to save space and weight. For $5 this was a steal! came with the lamps and wirenuts too!

Oh wow 5 bucks Shocked I got my used signs for that price but my one with backup which was new was 35 (costs around 80 at HD). Not sure if the US still allows PL/T5 and incandescent signs but I know they banned them in Canada so everything is now LED. I personally liked the older incandescent and PL signs since they had a slot on the bottom to light the doorway/path which the LED signs lack.

And yeah I probably would take out the extra stuff to save weight too.

This doesn't have the slots, which makes me think it's a bit newer. BTW, the guy i bought this from said he had HUNDREDS of these. Shocked Very Happy I'll send one to anyone who wants one for the $5 plus shipping. Shipping will probably be a lot to canada though if you are interested. The box weighs around 5-10 pounds before it's opened.

Ah, I see I remember some just had the slot but some has a small piece of prismatic 12 (AKA Troffer lens) over the slot. Anyways is this plastic or metal...they came out with plastic incandescent exit signs when they were starting to be phased out.
streetlight98   [Aug 16, 2012 at 08:59 PM]
This is metal. Very Happy The date code is "JB" if anyone can crack it. I might give Hubbell an e-mail to see if they'll give the date of this... Do you want one?
joe_347V   [Aug 16, 2012 at 10:49 PM]
Nah, I already have like 7 exit signs Shocked and I will shipping will be quite a bit. Thanks for the offer though.

And yeah I liked the metal exit signs better too, the plastic ones seem a bit cheap to me. As for the date there might be one on the battery.

I am an exit sign collector too, want to know more about this one...
streetlight98   [Aug 16, 2012 at 11:26 PM]
I didn't see any markings on the battery other than what was stamped on the front though I'll look at it more closely later.

Jace; do you want one? they cost $5 plus shipping too. These seem like pretty hefty units. they're made in china but appear to built exceptionally well. Plus they're very flexable when it comes to options (three mounting options, two letter color options). If you want I'll send it with a pair of those old GE exit sign lamps i was telling Joe about that i saw at a local hardware store for whatever the cost of them is. Cool

The only complaint i have about this one is that the instructions are very vague. Neutral
