Rocky Point Park Lights: The Birds misunderstood the name WestingHOUSE
Looks like the birds made this Westinghouse OV-400 their house. They were flying like crazy around it every now and then. Little tiny birds like the ones that were in the old M-250R2 in front of my house.

rofl so its the birds that does this type of light work eh? Very Happy
streetlight98   [Jun 28, 2012 at 02:27 PM]
lol yeah. Once the glass gets vandalized and a part breaks off, the birds move right in. Luckily for these birds, this light hasn't come on since about 2005 so they won't be fried at night. Laughing

It's obvious the bird read the name as "Rest in this HOUSE" Laughing Razz

LOL that's awesome Joe. Laughing Laughing I really want one of these so I can see the OV-400 tag inside. All of my favorite medium sized lights are here: OV-25, M-400, ITT 25. Plus there's a M-400R2 and these guys.

Cool pics of the lights in the park! The OV-400 is kinda rare, but it evolved into the OVX.

Thanks! I've never seen the OV-400 used anywhere else under Narragansett Electric or anywhere at all for that matter. I have a list of all the usable lights (some are too far gone such as the M-400 i posted a pic of and a OV-25 that got destroyed when primary lines fell near the "wind jammer" building. I didn't list the "too far gone" lights in the list below.
Here's the list of lights in restorable condition:
- (5) M-400 Split door: all in good condition with clean refractors; some paint wear; have NEMA labels
- (1) ITT Series 25: fixture in good condition dispite broken and browned polycarbonate lens; birds nest; has NEMA label
- (1) M-400R2: from the mid-90s; excellent condition with no noticeable paint wear; has NEMA label
- (2) NEMA Head: One has its refractor while the other doesn't; good overall condition; either 175 or 250W MV since they have ED28 lamps
- (more than 3) 1960s-1970s OV-25 Silverliner: More than three are in perfect condition, though there are additional lights that I can only see from bing bird's eye view so I can identify the condition of them.
- (At least 7) 1960s M-400: Gray paint (worn out); at least 4 are fully intact; at least 3 have no refractor or lamp due to vandalism; two have scorch marks on the doors.
- (10) OV-15 "OV-400" Silverliner: 4 are in perfect condition; 4 with damaged or missing refractor; 1 with damaged refractor and birds nest; 1 with damaged refractor and possible bullet hole in door.

That's all of the lights for a grand total of at least 29 lights that can be saved. The longer they wait to clear out the park the better because if I can drive there myself there's a better shot of getting lights since my mom won't let me get any more lights unless they're given to me without my asking.

Oh wow, there's still a number of lights there in good condition. I wonder how many of them still have vintage lamps inside. Razz
streetlight98   [Jun 29, 2012 at 06:11 PM]
Yep almost all of the lights are in working condition. About half need new refractors. Since most of the PCs are missing from the lights (the PC either blew out of the receptacle or broke loose from the contact blades on the base), I won't know unless I get them down. Narragansett Electric almost always changed the PC and lamp together so that they could tell the last time the light was serviced by the PC date.

Odds are that the majority of the lamps aren't that old since all the lights with broken refractors had ED37 lamps. Do you know when most companies went from BT to ED lamps? I'm thinking the 80s...

Hmm I believe Sylvania switched during the early 90s, Philips during the late 80s, and GE during the mid 60s...I have a couple of GE Bonusline ED 28s from the late 60s. Shocked
streetlight98   [Jun 29, 2012 at 07:42 PM]
In that case, these may be vintage lamps because Narragansett Electric primarily used GE lamps. Very Happy

Ahh, cool if you have a camera with a high power zoom or a pair of binoculars you might be able to read the etch from the ground. Razz
streetlight98   [Jun 29, 2012 at 08:44 PM]
I don't have a good camera, but I do have a pair of binoculars. Not a great chance of being able to read the etch (if it's still there) but it's worth a shot the next time I'm there.

They flew West instead of South to their new house!
streetlight98   [Jun 30, 2012 at 01:26 AM]
These birds must be from the UK then. Razz these birds better find another "house" to call their home though because whether I get these or not they'll come down eventually. I just hope to be around when that happens. Very Happy I don't live far from here by car, but the only way to get here from my house is by the freeway so I can't use my bike.

I made two accomplishments though: I took pictures of every light I had access to and took inventory on what lights are left in the park. The reason why I had "at least" and "more than" in my list is becuase there are some lights that I couldn't see in person but I can see them on bing's bird's eye view map.

I can distinguish the OV-25 and M-400 from the bird's eye view because of the different shape and color. The OV-25s are narrow and dark in color while the M-400s are rounded and lighter in color from bird's eye view. It seems the gray painted vintage lights held up their paint better than the silver painted ones. Any silverliners I see around here look bare with absolutly no paint left.
GullWhiz   [Jun 30, 2012 at 02:12 AM]
Are you sure they held the paint? Because the GEs bare metal is kinda light in color.....I got my 1969 and 1970 GE M-250R and a 1980 GE M-250R1 and the paint......was no longer there, only the door has the paint, the top was bare and light in color......
streetlight98   [Jun 30, 2012 at 02:35 AM]
maybe i saw bare metal with bird's eye view. I noticed westinghouse's metal is darker. It almost looks like the fixture is painted a flat black color at a quick look.
