8" Signals on Front Street in Lincoln
I think these are 8" signals looking at the single screw to open the doors on them. These look to be fitted with LEDs. The last time I came by this way there were incandescents in them with the green lens on the left missing.

Nice find! They look like they might be Eagle Mark IVs.

Anyways 8-8-8s are rarely seen now since most places opted to replace them with LED 12-8-8s instead of converting them to LED. In fact I only know of a handful of converted 8-8-8s.

8-8-8 signals were never really used much at all here. Most signals are 12" signals. Most crosswalks have the 12-12-8 R-Y-Y set up that I mentioned before. I wonder if that's just a RI thing since I've never seen it elsewhere.

Over here 8-8-8 signals were mostly used for the secondary and auxiliary head. The primary head here was a 12-8-8 since the late 50s early 60s. They are still approved by the MTO as a secondary and auxiliary head for roads with a speed limit less than 40-50 km/h but as most places want to standardize the 8-8-8 is now mostly unused.

The only new installs I see of 8-8-8 signals are for specialized streetcar, bus, and bicycle signals.

Come to New York City, and you'll find plenty of 8" traffic signals still in service. The folks don't intend to replace them in the near future, anyway.

Most of the 8" traffic signals there were manufactured by Marbelite, and most of them date back to the 1960s to 1970s. Others (namely the 1058 from Marbelite) are older, for that they date back to the early 1960s to 1950s. Only a handful of them still remain in service to this day in the city of New York.

Among those older 8" traffic signals, new 8" traffic signals are frequently installed there. New York City like to use General Traffic Equipment heads for the most part, but other types are used, such as McCain, for example.

Which are older, 12" or 8"? Or did they come out at about the same time?

8 inch have been the standard size for traffic signals since they began standardizing roadway traffic signals in the 1920s. 12 inch lenses came about in the early 1950s and were offered as an option to the standard 8 inch lens for select situations.

I hope they don't phase out the 8" signals because I see 12" signals used at every new intersection I know of.

8 inch traffic signals are still being manufactured as there is still a demand for them in some places. Siemens ITS (EAGLE's new name as of 2008) discontinued the 8 inch version of the "Mark IV" design recently

Hey Mike, forget what I said about them being Eagle Mark IVs, they actually look more like old Eagle "Flatback" signals now that I took a closer look at them.

Yeah 8" signal sections are still in high demand in Ontario because we still install a lot of 12-8-8 heads here.
