My area actually uses signals with grey backs, only problem is they tend to yellow in a few years.

Are these suppose to be yellow or grey? And I though these are faded. Shocked

They're supposed to be yellow. Shocked I don't think we have any gray signals around here.

There's a bunch of this type of signal near where I live and they're all very faded (and peeling too).

These look just like my PEEK traffic signal (mine has green paint and is much better condition though). These are certainly much older than PEEK though. Maybe Nick knows who made this style before PEEK? I'd take a guess and say this is a 70's-80's set-up.

Yes I do know who made this style. This was originally the Type R model made by Crouse Hinds, that ran from 1965 till 1983. After that Crouse-Hinds got out of the traffic signal manufacturing business and the molds were bought by Traffic Control Technologies who changed the logo on the back from "Crouse Hinds" "TCT- Traffic Control Technologies". In the early 1990s the logo was changed to only show "TCT". When TCT was swallowed up by PEEK in the late 90s the logo was removed. The earliest Peek heads had no logo, the current ones have a PEEK logo on the back. The molds were copied by Chapel Hill who has a large "CH" in a box on the back. Despite their common first letters, Chapel Hill and Crouse Hinds had no direct relation.

Wow this style was pretty widely used. Do you have an idea on how old this set up is by looking at it?
basilicon89   [Jun 05, 2012 at 09:47 PM]
my best guess would say this set up is 25 to 30 years old...especially if the heads are Crouse Hinds.

Yeah I guess the 1980s is about right.

How common are tunnel visors in your area MIke? Over here they are only used if the intersection is skewed otherwise the traditional cutaway visors are used.
streetlight98   [Jun 06, 2012 at 08:43 PM]
Tunnel visors are always used here in new installarions. Cut-away visors are very rare here. They're usually only found in the very old signal installations i.e. faded green or yellow signals in the poor sections of Providence. I think tunnel visors have been used since at least the 80s or before. On the other hand, the tunnel style pedestrian visors (on left) were used on the old incandescent and fiber-optic peds while the cut-away ped visors (which I prefer and are on the right) are what's currently used. I'm guessing the ped signal cluster on the right was a replacement because it has the Eagle style back to it, which is currently used as well.
