175w Mercury Lamp Tester
Made this with some spare parts I had lying around. Finally found a use for that 175w Advance F-Can mercury ballast I found more than a year ago too. Lamp shown is a 175w Sylvania /DX from the early 80s.

If you turn it upside down and add a refractor it sorta looks like a makeshift Powr/Bracket. xD

Just how heavy is this ballast? Just wondering...
streetlight98   [Nov 30, 2013 at 03:25 AM]
seems like it'd weigh about the same as a slimline or HO ballast looking at the size. i've never seen an HID F-can ballast in person.

It weighs around the same as a HO ballast. It's actually the same size as a HO ballast too. Oh and I also changed the socket in this since mogul to medium reducers kept on getting stuck in the old one.
streetlight98   [Nov 30, 2013 at 07:43 PM]
you could make two socket blocks that plug in so that if you have a mogul lamp you can plug the mogule socket block into the ballast and same goes for a medium base lamp. i agree that mogul to medium adapters are prone to gettign stuck and i always end up breaking off a bunch of the ceramic trying to take one out lol. i wish they made mogul to medium adapters that had soemthing to grab onto when removing them like med-mog adapters and mog-mog extenders.

I've actually started making little springs to wedge between the socket contact and the base of the adapter so i don't need to screw the adapter in as far lol. You just need to watch out that you don't make the spring too big or loose because then you'll short out your socket... no it didn't happen to me yet lol.

very nice! i need to make use of the few F-can ballasts i have acquired lately

also to add you can use VHO ballasts as 175W MV/MH ballasts because they run at same specs

Thanks, I think HO ballasts can run 100w mercs, since their specs are similar.

What about a single lamp slimline F96T12 running a 75/80w MV? I know someone (I think it was the late J-Frog) ran a 175w MV lamp on a F96/VHO ballast with at least moderate success.
