Just a Broken Cover Plate Eh?
One of the switches in my house had a broken cover plate but when I opened it up I got a nasty surprise. Someone managed to drill a hole in the back and thread a cable in. O_o Oh and there's a buried handy box on the left for some reason. I plan to replace this with a proper three gang box and split up the switches so that the side light is on it's own switch.

I'll post a updated pic of this when I get a chance to fix the thing.

This is exactly the expression I have at the moment, the face, the hand, everything xD I see some cheesy looking connections on the brown-ish switch, and am I seeing things or this switch has two wires on each screw? o.O That's a big code violation!

Well that's the sort of stuff I saw many times in the past!

Yeah, Laughing and yep that brown switch does have two wires on each screw too Shocked but still I wonder who decided to stuff a handy box in and then patch up the wall Mad and don't get me started on the hole on the back. Rolling Eyes

At least they used wire nuts, not just tape.......... You will probably find the covered box has more wiring in it. Drywall repair time coming up.

How come two wires on a screw is a violation? And what are the differences between handy boxes and juction boxes? They look the same to me...
A_lights   [Jun 10, 2012 at 06:22 PM]
two wires cant stay on one screw well, so a pigtail is necessary
joe_347V   [Jun 11, 2012 at 02:57 AM]
Yeah, the correct way would be to pigtail but I've seen others use to stab in connector for the second wire or strip the wire in the middle.

Stab in connector is "OK" but not recommended..
joe_347V   [Jun 12, 2012 at 09:43 PM]
Yeah, I avoid using stab-in connectors or even those push-in wire nuts you seen in the store now.

There are types of receptacles that has screw clamps and you can put 2 wires per screw on! They are the higher quality ones and are labeled as "prefered" instead of "standard" in Home Depot

Yes I know what your talking about,I used them when I added plugs for the lighting in my basement they're nice because you don't have to loop the wires at all

Yeah, the GFCI outlets I installed had those connectors too, oddly the premium outlets sold here don't have the screw clamps, in fact they only have screw terminals on them.
