LPS Tunnel Lights
These light up the tunnels that go under the Long Beach airport. the one on the right is EOL, once fluorescent, then LPS now HPS. Also neon signs tied to carbon monoxide detectors telling you to turn off motor anddo not enter, I dont know if they are still there, I saw them about 6 months ago, never seen them lit. Photo 6-80

IT's ashame that LPS lighting is dissapearing, especially as they are the most efficient Light source made upto 200 lumens per watt, also people say LPS is horrible but I dont think it is also you dont get as much Glare and Light scatter compared to HPS light as LPS being a Linear Light source it is easy to Control in Cutoff Lighting

In tunnel lighting, LPS are the best. Tunnel lighting (Especially in intercity roads) don't require color rendition and a "Point light source", so LPS should be still be made for tunnel lighting.
Regrettably tunnel lighting in Israel tunnels in Intercity roads are a direct victim of the moving from HPS lighting to LEDs color washing (Philips/Color Kinetics DMX-512 fixtures replaced the former HPS lighting), which although more beautiful, are much more power hungry and less lights. Tunnels in intercity roads don't needs so luxury lighting and LPS lighting is much better.
LPS may be even more environment friendlier light source then the LEDs themselves in terms of materials.
Even if both sources contains no mercury, LEDs may contains another toxic materials (LEDs are semiconductors) that don't exist in LPS lamps (Simply borate glass, sodium, noble gases [Argon+neon usually] and tungsten).
The only reason for their high price is because of their rarity (Theoretically they should be cost only slightly higher then fluorescent lamps).

I believe the demise of LPS is due to monochromatic emission that people dislked. It is like being color-blinded when going through these lights...

Even cities such as San Jose and San Diego have given up on LPS, despite being near observatories. San Jose just began the great changeout to LEDs, San Diego is talking about induction.
