Sign Lighting Remnants
A lot of old 60s era sign supports in Ontario still have remnants of their sign lighting equipment left behind. This one has part of the bracket for the fluorescent lights and the HO ballast box left on it along with a small segment of wire.

Note that the sign has been overlaid with aluminium panels. This was probably done in the mid 80s-90s when the sign lighting was removed so a more reflective sign was needed and the signs updated to include English/French directions. Overlaid signs are common on MTO freeways. The panels are usually riveted or screwed on the existing sign.

The sign is probably from the 1960-1970s though since it has rounded corners. Later signs had rounded borders on a square sign while the newest ones have square borders and square signs.

Note the Eagle Mark IV signal head too, it was salvaged and reused on this temporary set of signals.

Interesting. the newest signs here look like this. this pic shows a little variety of the signs used here. and finally, here's an example of an older sign here, though it doesn't look any different. notice the lattice construction of the pole. I like that design better than the newer plain old fat poles they're using now. The first two pics are brand new as RIDOT replaced 90% of it's freeway billboard signs in 2012 with newer more reflective ones. i think the rest are missouts.

I think Quebec still uses a similar support as the older type you linked too.

Here's another old style MTO support, which I call a rounded truss which I prefer to the newer ones. It was used from the mid 60s to the late 90s.

The next style was the rectangular truss style, which was used from the 1980s to the late 90s.

Starting in 1999 or so the triangle truss style was used. They also started to use the cantilvered style around this time too.

I believe only the rounded truss type and the 1980s sign supports has built in provisions for sign lighting.

your first link is a perfect example of the difference between the traditional and blunt nose westie OV-25s too. Cool the curved truss design looks pretty cool too
