westinghouse superbulbs quite a find man!
Ebay find. I got 6 of these beauties however one has a broken filament and will only work base up that allows the filament to get in contact. They are all from 1981. The filaments are unsupported as were most early 80s westy general service incandescents.

My Westy bug-a-way (60w 115-125v) has a supported filament and also works base up since it's broken, I've re-welded the filament by shaking the bulb on a couple occasions but haven't messed with it lately. I'm guessing 70s judging by the 115-125v voltage rating and blue glass insulator on the base; am I right?

he said they're from 1981. These are cool lamps! I've never seen this shape before! Any real reason for its use?

I'm talking about mine; not these. I'm not sure about the shape...Westy sure had some odd bulb shapes back in the day! Laughing

Yeah they did. Laughing I'm actually starting to remember this shape... Was it used on some MAZDA lamps back in the day? Neutral

mike the shape you remember may have been the philips IQ series of bulbs in the 90s and the long life clear and frost bulbs made in the 80s and 90s. they had the larger DC-19 size. the shape was originally invented by westinghouse for the superbulb when it was introduced in '68. the larger DC-19 size came along in '78 for the westinghouse turtle lite bulbs.

I remember seeing the T shaped bulbs in use but I don't think I've seen the DC shaped bulbs in use before.

Ditto for me...at one time I thought the T-shaped bulbs and BT halogens were florescent! But that was when I was MUCH younger.

Nice find -I always liked this shape. Do these have a krypton fill? I wonder if the DC shape was a marketing gimmick or there actually is a reason for it.
Silverliner14B   [Jan 13, 2013 at 12:04 AM]
Alain, yup they are indeed krypton fill gas. the smaller bulb size is to reduce the volume of the expensive krypton gas, and it was advertised as a space saver. I suppose the shape of the bulb is merely for looks, to differentiate it from the more common types.
