50w Mercury Lamp
50w M-E DTC mercury lamp I found at Restore. It's shown here running on a 40w fluorescent ballast so if I find a real 50w merc ballast it might be a bit brighter. Right now it's around slightly brighter than a 100w incandescent.

The base is stamped HUNGARY 09 87...I'm guessing Sept 1987 from Tungsram?

Nice! yeah i think it should be a little brighter than a 100W incandescent. IIRC MV lamps are either 2 or 3 times more efficient than incandescent but i think it's 2X

Thanks! I think that's why the 50w mercs haven't really caught on since they're only slightly brighter than a 100w incandescent.

The thing I like about it being dim compared to other HID lamp is that I can run it in my room without racking up the power bill. And plus it dosen't blast my room with too much light like 175w lamps.

Nice!! I have a 50W merc that I want to try with a 40W fluorescent ballast.

175w clear MV was just perfect for my room but a little bright if you were looking right at it of course...now when I fire up the 400w MH occasionally... Laughing
joe_347V   [Jan 05, 2014 at 01:55 AM]
Yeah, a LPF preheat ballast would run these. If not a 50w MH ballast or a 35w MH ballast would also work in a pinch. Make sure you disable the ignitors though.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Jan 05, 2014 at 01:58 AM]
For a 75/80w one would a 2-lamp F40 RS or preheat ballast work? What about a F96T12 ballast? I know a 215w VHO ballast will run a 175w MV...is the opposite true at all? (Aside from cathode heating as they're rapid start lamps)?
streetlight98   [Jan 05, 2014 at 02:34 AM]
I find that 175W MV lights my room really good (a little on the bright side though) but the heat from the 175W fixture is really a lot with either my OV-10 or M-250R1. I like my room to be on the cooler side (62-68 degrees) so i typically shut my heat vent unless i get too cold (i have forced hot air).

I find 100W MV lights my room well too and it doesn't get nearly as hot. After a couple of hours my M-250A is only fairly warm on top (the glass is sorta hot but i can hold my hand for a couple of seconds before its too much).

Yeah, 175w MV lights my room pretty good but it gets kinda hot in here. 100w MV is better but I like how 50w MV is dim enough to get that MV mood without being too bright.

I use my 400W MV to heat the room this time of the year! Cool
streetlight98   [Jan 05, 2014 at 02:17 PM]
yeah if i'm in the mood for not a lot of light i stick one of my BT25s in (either my sylvania or Westy lifeguard /DX lamps) since they're both about the same brightness and create a nice dim glow like moonlight.
vaporeyes   [Jan 06, 2014 at 02:59 AM]
A 50w /DX mercury is about the same brightness as a 100w incandescent. That size is the least efficient of all HID lamps.

I have a lot of HID fixtures in the house as accent and/or ambient lighting. Clear mercury & HPS are particularly interesting for the colour they put out.
joe_347V   [Jan 06, 2014 at 06:05 AM]
Yeah, I don't have any dimmed out mercs so I have to use a lower wattage to get less light Razz I usually try to stick around the 100w, 125w, 175w wattages for indoors.

Ahh, yeah I guess lower wattage HIDs are less efficient to begin with too so it being the same as a 100w incandescent is reasonable. Don't have a lot of permanently installed HID fixtures inside though aside from a 70w CMH uplight in my room and a 175w yardlight in the garage.
streetlight98   [Jan 06, 2014 at 11:08 AM]
yeah my only HID indoors is my street light stand in my room, which is pretty much an industrial floorlamp if you think about it. Laughing

You're right! I've often thought that 400w MH highbay would make a good space heater, with useable light to boot! Laughing
joe_347V   [Jan 11, 2014 at 09:51 PM]
Well, it does make a good heater but I think 1kW MV is better Razz .
streetlight98   [Jan 12, 2014 at 02:42 PM]

So any orders? Razz Laughing I meant for it to be a completely outrageous price, but after calculating it out, $7980 is actually pretty reasonable for twelve 2000W MH sportslights with lamps, a wall mount bracket, a 120 to 480V step up transformer, and a cord. lol Shocked

And now that pot is legal in Colorado I could also sell a similar 12X 1000W MH/HPS version called the McCann Lighting Gro-Lume 12000 lol.

Can I place a order for delivery ten years later? Laughing Razz
