For a second I thought this was in a store or something...I see you have a recessed square light too...was your house built in the 70s when those were popular?
gailgrove   [Feb 27, 2013 at 07:29 PM]
Never got around to replying but yes, my house was built sometime in the 70's, not quite sure when though.
GullWhiz   [Feb 27, 2013 at 09:55 PM]
Check your breaker box, it may have inspection date on it....

Square recessed lights was also popular in installations in the early 80s too as one of my houses I used to live in built in 1985 had those in basement and some early 80s buildings I have seen had those too.
gailgrove   [Feb 27, 2013 at 10:08 PM]
It was replaced in 1997, so I can't find it there, I think the house was built with a fuse panel. The furnace, water heater, A/C and pretty much everything have been replaced at some point too so no indication there... My grandmother's house has similar lights that were in the house when she bought it back in 1963, so they were popular for awhile.

Yeah, it seems these were a 60s/70s/80s thing...

Hmm, I've noticed that the 70s and older square recessed lights usually have the lamp horizontal while the newer ones from the 80s usually have vertical lamps.

A lot of older building here still have square recessed lights too, some are from the late 40s- early 50s.

I usually see them with horizontal lamps...
streetlight98   [Feb 28, 2013 at 02:09 AM]
I personally like vertical lamps in recessed fixtures since it looks better IMO. The light distribution is a little more even it seems. I like the recessed squares better than recessed cans. There's a chuch that has recessed squares with clear ribbed glasses with a target type design (a center circle with a larger one around it and a larger one around that one, etc) that look pretty old. They have 23W CFLs that take about five minutes to warm up though. I kinda like that though since it's more like HID. There are some old lookign recessed cans too. Most used to have 100W incandescents (now they too have 23W CFLs) and a small group of them had (and still have) preheat PL adapters. I think they're 13W PLs. I love to flip the switch and see that crazy blink-happieness. Smile

You mean with a glass like this, Mike?

My university still has some like that from the 50s, they've been disconnected as MH canopy lights are in use now though.
gailgrove   [Feb 28, 2013 at 02:14 AM]
These ones are horizontal, I personally like both.
streetlight98   [Feb 28, 2013 at 02:16 AM]
exactly like that Joe! and they have horizonatal lamps. I don't mind horizontal lamp squares but i think the vertical lamps look more uniform since they're all symmetrical lol. It's the semi-OCD type personality kicking in. Razz Laughing

I've actually never seen those in merc before though. The square recessed lights I've seen with mercs had vertical reflector lamps and a mismatched A shape one here and there.
streetlight98   [Feb 28, 2013 at 02:31 AM]
I've never seen HID recessed squares either, just 175W MV or MH cans, both with ribbed glass and open bottom.
GullWhiz   [Feb 28, 2013 at 02:53 AM]
My school, the wing that was built in 1987 had CLEAR MERCURY VAPOR 8" by 8" square recessed lights with glass cover!!! They were found in hall intersections!!!!!!!!!! There are some bigger square recessed lights at my shopping center I think 1 by 1 foot instead of 6 inch square or 8 inch square with MH lamps.....and I've even seen HPS square recessed lights....kinda rare though....oh I also know a school from early 90s that had lunchroom with 2x2 recessed squares with 400 watt MHs
gailgrove   [Feb 28, 2013 at 03:00 AM]
I've seen those big 2x2 ones before, the local "civic centre" built in the early 70's has tons of them, all 400w mercs! I think I've seen the HPS ones too.
streetlight98   [Feb 28, 2013 at 09:06 PM]
I've seen 2X2 metal halide troffers before and metal halide recessed highbays.
FGS   [Feb 28, 2013 at 11:18 PM]
I have seen these 2x2 in MVs and MHs. The mercury ones are from that 1960s store with the two Neanderthals. MHs are at a Giant store with the really cool reflectors. They're GEs. My bank's drive thru ATMs have the somewhat smooth reflectors with glass covers on there. I haven't seen them in HPS yet.
joe_347V   [Mar 01, 2013 at 12:22 PM]
Well, I've seen the 2X2 MH recessed lights both the ones that look like troffers and the open ones that use a highbay reflector.
streetlight98   [Mar 01, 2013 at 07:32 PM]
I've only seen the recessed HID troffers and recessed high bays in one store and they're in the SAME store! I'm thinking the couple HID troffers were either added in or were replacements.
