Old Double Guyed Arms
Here's a shot of some old double guys that dates to the '50s. From what I could make out from the old pics of this area, they originally held MV clamshells and had remote ballast cans mounted near the arm (pic of similar ones close by)

The MV clamshells was replaced by (HPS, presumably) cobras in the late '80s and the replacement cobras was later replaced with the OVXs you see in the pic.

Denver actually has some old double guy wire arms. On 25. they have new lights on them but they have the old arms. With some trusses. Maybe I should get some pics of them.

Double guy wire arms are nice. Cool

We still have some here but most are on wooden power poles instead of concrete like these.

Nice! We have some old double guy wire arms that look like these on aluminum poles. They origionally held Form 109. Shocked

Thanks, I fixed the link to the old pic so you can see what the original lumes would have looked like. Very Happy

These poles are now on their 3rd or 4th fixture, they got LED'd around 2014.

Awesome! I was afraid you were going to say they were replaced. Shocked It's interesting to see something other than a tapered elliptical in Ontario lol. Not much of a variety of arms up there but there was a nice variety of fixtures. Rhode Island has tons of different arm styles, but it often looks weird having different arm styles (and even lengths) on the same stretch of road. At least having all tapered ellipticals makes the streets more uniform. RIDOT uses all davit poles but they rarely use the same exact pole for more than one interchange unless they relight multiple interchanges at the same time (which they've often done in the past to replace NGrid lights). The variety is interesting but I wish they would just choose one style davit and stick with it. Spot replacements hardly ever match. They've used davits with a really wide bend radius, ones with a very tight bend radius, ones with a thicker pipe that has a 2" tenon at the end for the light, ones that just gradually taper to 2" at the end without the use of a tenon, the variations are endless lol. They always use the longer (like 8ft or 10ft) arms on the freeways with the tall poles and the ramps use the short poles and usually shorter (~6ft) arms but sometimes they use the longer arms on shorter poles on the ramps too (very typical of spot replacements; they make no attempt to match spot replacements to the surrounding poles).

It seems the obsession with tapered elliptical arms only started in the mid 70s lol. There's still some 60s braced S arms and double guys left in my neighbourhood, they survived the LED changeout although I've seen other cities replace the arm when the new LEDs were installed.

Toronto also has a nice variety of arms. The outer suburbs are all HPS drop lens cobras on tapered ellipticals but the inner suburbs and downtown has gumballs on braced S-arms. The city owned freeways have davits, they don't match because of newer replacements though.

Ah yeah I unfortunately wasn't able to check out the inner suburbs or the city when I was up there (though in Niagara falls I saw some cool lighting, much of which might be LED now). Up in Collingwood, Ontario it's pretty much all tapered E's.

Yeah NEES started using the 6ft, 8ft, and 10ft tapered arms around 1965 (ditto for the larger 12ft and 15ft truss arms) and used them religiously until the late 70s when they started using the 1-1/4" pipe arms for lower wattage lights. They might have still used truss arms or tapered arms for 400W lights at that point though since the cheesy pipe arms probably couldn't hold a 400W MV. The only 400W MVs I'd ever seen on those pipe arms were 400W MV ITT 25s or M-400R2s with polycarbonate refractors (never glass). NGrid had installed 400W HPS M-400s on those pipe arms in Providence and they seemed to do OK but if they hadn't been replaced with LEDs I'd expect the arms might start to sag a little.

Even after 1965 they had used 6ft upsweep arms (1-1/4") for 1000 lumen incandescent lights until around 1970 when I think they stopped installing new incandescents (though I think Joe Maurath might have said they spot replaced damaged incandescents until the early-mid 70s)

BTW Joe, I found this on eBay and thought you might be tempted. I sure was until I saw that shipping from Canada to Rhode Island was $85. That basically offsets the saving for me, as the lamps would end up costing just over $20 each; not much cheaper than buying them online from 1000Bulbs or something.
