Lost MTO
This construction area just keeps getting more, and more bizarre with each new set up. First MTO sets up polefabs with AE 125`s at the exit ramps which usually have tall octogonal steel poles. Then they added some concrete poles that still have no fixtures on them after both between both of the ramp intersections. Then these aluminum poles with FCO AE 125`s. Seems that most if not the rest of the replacements will be these FCO`s on aluminum poles. Some of the old polefabs will probably still be used as well

judging by your 1st photo, looks to me aluminum poles are also being used along the streetside and not just at the MTO ramps! You think they will spare some old origional polefabs?
Model25FanForever   [Apr 02, 2017 at 01:31 PM]
I think they will spare a few of them. The OVX, and OV-15 poles beside Tomken might be spared since they didnt put temporary lights up to those 2. Maybe the polefabs in front of bacardi will stay, unless they just haven't poured bases and added lights yet.

I'd be really surprised if they actually pour the bases. Almost all anchor-base poles use precast concrete bases with rebar, anchor bolts, and conduit openings already there. Then they lower the base into a hole in the ground with a crane. Pretty cool to watch. The advantage of precast is that it can be made to a higher standard and be made more exact and the installation process is much faster (don't have to wait a month for the concrete to cure or mess with setting the anchor bolts in the semi-dried concrete).

Amazing. Actually virtually every anchor base around here is poured concrete into a cardboad cylinder form! And the start to end process is often 1-3 months just like you said. As our traffic signal sets are all anchor bases, that is why we are always left in anticipation of what hardwware appears because we're left waiting 3 months for it all to appear and be activated!

Yeah because it probably takes longer for the concrete to cure up here compared to down there because of the climate as well. (Depending on time of year). I would love to see more polefabs being installed again .Although I would rather see these aluminum poles over the plain boring concrete poles that are already pretty much everywhere. I'm not entirely sure if the polefabs with signals on them such as this and this polefab would be considered anchor based. Haven't ever looked down on it, but maybe they are buried? The concrete signal poles on Kennedy aren't anchored in for sure.

Yeah, I can't say I've seen a prefab anchor base here. I remember one time someone knocked down a signal pole in my neighbourhood and sheared the anchor bolts off the base. They had to install a temporary pole for 2 months until the replacement anchor base was ready.

They install a 8+ foot long 2' diameter cardboard tube in the ground as a mold, then setup the rebar which comes in the preassembled cage, install the anchor bolts which also preassembled on a jig to ensure the position of the bolts relative to each other is maintained. Finally they fill the cardboard tube with concrete and leave it for 2-3 months.

Yeah those cardboard things are sonotubes. They're supposed to rot away after a few months. Seems like they go through a lot of work. Would be much easier to use precast stuff.

@Model25Fan, as new streetside aluminum poles are super rare around here, I'm glad to see them too. Some places Ontario use precast curbs, tall walls/jersey barriers, bases, you name it. We like pouring them around here Razz

This project has been finished. Here's what they installed:
-a small stretch and random spots have the low aluminum poles with AEL 125 FCO
-random spots have tall concrete poles with AEL 125 FCO, but two of these poles reused powerlite R37/R47 fixtures
-random spots did not get new poles with old polefabs ramaining but with new AEL 125's drop lenses replacing old powerlite fixtures.

It's not a good final configuration if you're OCD about pole heights/fixture consistency/consistency of drop and FCO. Shocked
