My open cap!
Here is my open cap!!! This looks orange to me.....I know some electrical companies doesn't use an open cap but an orange sticker that one would slap onto the photocell socket for it to be removed though.

Awsome! where in the world did you come across this?
GullWhiz   [Apr 12, 2011 at 02:02 PM]
Eh, I don't remember, now you mention it....I am wondering!
Mercuryvapor123   [Apr 12, 2011 at 02:36 PM]
LOL, cool and different. Laughing

Does it have the contact inside? I have one from 97 and it has all but the contact and the window is a black piece of plastic as opposed to clear! Cool open cap though!
GullWhiz   [Apr 12, 2011 at 06:54 PM]
it seems hard to open....it started to crack so I wont mess with it!

And look at your personal message on GoL please Embarrassed

Yeah the ones from about 80-91ish were really stiff and tough to open!

ok!

My open cap is a low profile FP one. I recently opened it and turned it into a shorting cap though. I connected the line and load contacts.

what does an open cap do?
HPSM250R2   [Feb 11, 2012 at 04:49 AM]
Open caps are used for turning off individual streetlights.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Feb 11, 2012 at 04:59 AM]
why not just disconnect the light, or can these turn them on too?
HPSM250R2   [Feb 11, 2012 at 05:15 AM]
No an open cap only keeps the light off 24/7. If a light needed to be kept on 24/7 then a shorting cap would be used. And of course a photocontrol switches lights on at dusk and off at dawn.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Feb 11, 2012 at 05:23 AM]
oh I see. But why not just disconnect THE PC, and why does this have contacts inside it?
HPSM250R2   [Feb 11, 2012 at 05:35 AM]
I think they only use open caps to temporarily turn off lights. I have never seen an open cap in person but i think there is nothing inside them but pretty much the tops of the legs that go through the base.
GullWhiz   [Feb 11, 2012 at 01:04 PM]
actually I have 3 open caps, one of them actually has stuff inside but not connected!
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Feb 11, 2012 at 04:53 PM]
why is that? Why not just make a plastic insulator? I know I may sound picky, but I don't understand the engineering behind these.
streetlight98   [Feb 12, 2012 at 07:33 PM]
Well, there are contacts on these because the manufacturer uses one base for all of its PCs, shorting caps, and open caps. This does the same thing as just having no PC in the socket. There are no connections inside. They use these because they keep water from getting into the receptacle.
GullWhiz   [Feb 12, 2012 at 08:31 PM]
Believe it or not...you know those wire free devices...with the part that goes onto the photocell socket....they are acutally used the same molding to make phorocells but with a hole on top drilled with a PC socket screwed on top of the PC moldings and where the "eye" normally is....instead the wire goes through that opening! Ill try to take a pic and show it to you all.....

I want one of those photocell socket power taps, but I don't know where to get one and I certainly wouldn't pay the arm-and-a-leg those thigns probably cost.
HPSM250R2   [Feb 13, 2012 at 04:20 AM]
I got pricing on one of those photocontrol socket power taps from FP OLC a few years ago and i think it was about $75.

I wonder if you could make your own adapter for less using a day burner PC, PC socket and a extension cord.
