Rural Freeway Lighting
Here's a pic of how rural freeways here are usually lit here. There are three lights that light the offramps with two placed before and one placed after the ramp. The tapered e light in the background is newer than than truss light in the foreground.

Cool, are the merges also lit? If so how many poles?
gailgrove   [Sep 03, 2010 at 04:53 PM]
Nope the merges aren't lit most of the time
joe_347V   [Oct 23, 2010 at 03:00 AM]
Updated: Yeah most of the merges aren't lit but there's a few bigger merges that are also lit with 5-8 poles. Most of them are freeway to freeway though.

EDIT: I was in the area again today and the AE 125 on the tapered e arm on the left has been knocked down and the base covered by a traffic barrel.

Most of our state lighting are galvanized steel and when a car hit the pole (usually its the base of the pole which I believe is aluminum...and it damages the base but usually the pole and arm survives...while the fixture usually breaks....often but not always, but often the pole goes back up with new fixture and base but same pole and arm....but at times if it really gets damaged badly....then of course a new pole will get installed.....

Is the Silverliner right there an older one or a newer Crouse Hinds/Cooper?
Form109   [Oct 23, 2010 at 04:56 AM]
in Texas, our merges are pretty much all lit from what i've seen....Very Long Strings of continious lights are usually seen when the freeway goes into or near a city, though sometimes there is only Merges lit.

The AEL wasn't by chance still there? and Jace I'm not sure about the OV-25 but I'll check since coincidentally I will be going past there today Very Happy
joe_347V   [Oct 24, 2010 at 01:48 AM]
@Jace, most of our provincial lighting here also has a similar base on the pole that breaks, ours uses four break away bolts under a cover like this and I sometimes see them recycle the pole and arm too. I'm not sure about the OV25 too but I hope Niall will tell us Wink

@Niall, I didn't see the pole and arm passing by so I guess it's not there unless it was hidden in the ditch.
gailgrove   [Dec 05, 2010 at 01:42 AM]
Update: The same pole and arm that had the AEL has been put back up with a new fixture (400 watt 125 again) and with a new base.

Hmm. New Hampshire has a similat setup for I-93. There are three lights at the exit and a couple at the end of the exit but none on the merges. Here the exit either has lights all the way, or there are no lights. RIDOT is slowly putting lights on all of the exits though.
