Powergroove Ramp Lights
Spotted these over one of the on ramps to the Gardiner Expressway. Unfortunately I'm pretty sure these no longer work at night but it's still pretty neat to see the original ramp lighting still intact and with some I think 6' PG lamps still intact. They probably date back to when the Gardiner opened, back in the mid 60s. As far as I know, these are the last PG underpass lights left in Toronto. There was a another set over one of the Allen Expressway ramps but they were replaced with HPS wallpacks in 2013 (I'm surprised they even forgot about them for so long).

Not really sure who mide the fixture, the white painted ends on the cover seem to look like GE's outdoor fluorescent fixtures but then again it might be another Powerlite model.

Nice! So there's currently no ramp lighting at all? (aside from these of course)

Yeah, the only lighting on this ramp are the HPS cobras closer to the end of the ramp. You can sorta see the bridge mounted arm for that cobra at the right.

Yeah, I've been under the Gardiner countless times and I only recently noticed these were still there.

I wish our bridges here looked this good at this age. Our bridges from the 60s are falling apart and in various states of disrepair. Rolling Eyes

Cool find! There's one of the original VHO fixtures left under the doomed Alaskan Way viaduct in Seattle. I don't know if it has Powergroove lamps in it though. Amazing that so many of the ones on the ramp you photo'd are still intact.

Yeah the other VHO lights underneath the Gardiner all got removed (you can see what remains of the mounting brackets in the pic) and replaced with 400w MH wallpacks. I guess the height at which they're mounted also mean less chance of them getting vandalized.

@Mike, I believe the city spends quite a bit of money annually to maintain the Gardiner after there were incidents of falling concrete a few years ago. Although overall I find the older bridges here are still in fairly good condition.
