I wouldn't do that if i were you... what's wrong with the ballast that's already in the case? BTW, you'll need to melt the tar after.I honestly wouldn't mess with the ballast can unless you're sure you know what you're doing and your sure you can do it. You don't want to slice the thing in half and realize you can't finish it.
ok like I was saying when I get it I will need to look at it. And I am going to not use the older ballast I am going to drill into the tar and that will brake it up. That is what I think will work the best. The old ballast is 1,000w hps 480v I will put in a 400w MV/MH 120v ballast.
trust me...if it's tar filled...it's gonna be a LOT of work! I haven't had very good luck with those...and they are MESSY!
But if they aren't tar filled, like one of my remote ballast I had which was not tar filled....great! ....some remote ballasts are just weather proof which are just tightly sealed with a bunch of screws and gasket....and when opening it, it's EXTREMELY clean with a FRESH smell inside it!
probably close to double that. i know 400W MV ballast cans are 40 pounds alone give or take a few pounds according to Joe M. then again those are 1940s ballast cans and i'm assuming the 1000W ballast is within the last 15 years but still.
