Title: Two Truths and a Lie About Yourself
Post by: GEsoftwhite100watts on September 05, 2012, 08:07:52 PM
Okay guys, this was inspired by something we did in my Algebra class to introduce ourselves. You say one thing that isn't true about you and two that are and you have to guess the one that is a lie.
The only rule is:
-You may post more than once (but not twice in a row)
I'll start:
1. My computer area is lit by a 40w 130v 3500 hour inside-frost A19 lamp that appears to be made by Philips but has a Sylvania base as I type this.
2. I like (to name a few of my hobbies) light bulbs, vacuum tube radios, almost anything electric, excavators, and many others
3. I got a Westinghouse Ov-25 yesterday
WHICH ONE IS THE LIE???

#2?

1. I like a girl named Olivia.
2. I have two brothers and a pet dog.
3. I don't like seafood besides clamcakes & chowder.
Title: Re: Two Truths and a Lie About Yourself
Post by: GEsoftwhite100watts on September 06, 2012, 09:52:42 PM
You don't have two brothers
I WISH I had an OV25 (internally ballasted 400w MV.)

I have several metal halide lamps with the bases held in Yoplait cups as decorations/conversation pieces
I have painted a bathroom "Federal Green"
I live in an apartment
Title: Re: Two Truths and a Lie About Yourself
Post by: Mike on September 08, 2012, 06:22:20 PM
Correct... I have one brother and no pets what-so-ever.

I'm guessing #3 is a lie?

1. I lived in my Grandpa's apartment that he rents out for a year while my new house was being built.
2. Both my GE street lights looks the same, except one is smaller than the other and uses 225 fewer watts.
3. I am 5ft 5" tall.

Yep, I don't live in an apartment!
You didn't live in your grandpa's apartment...
I like country music
I'd love to own an excavator someday
I've laughed so hard I've almost vomited
Title: Re: Two Truths and a Lie About Yourself
Post by: Mike on September 08, 2012, 09:50:31 PM
Actually, he did rent his appartment to us when our new house was being built.  #2 was the wrong one. Yes, my GE streetlights are pretty much different sized twins, but the smaller one (the M-250A) uses 300 watts less than the bigger one.

I'm guessing #1 is incorrect?

1. It's raining outside.
2. My favorite fluorecent color temperature is cool white
3. My middle name is Alexander.
Title: Re: Two Truths and a Lie About Yourself
Post by: GEsoftwhite100watts on September 09, 2012, 01:48:38 PM
You're right:)
I'm stuck between 1 and 2 but I'll guess 2 because it's raining outside here...
1. My favorite florescent color is daylight deluxe, with cool white being a close second
My mercury vapor light has a broken diffuser
I LOVE HPS streetlights!
Title: Re: Two Truths and a Lie About Yourself
Post by: Mike on September 09, 2012, 09:46:27 PM
Actually, my middle name is David. You were right though, it was pouring like crazy last night. Tonight is quiet though it was much cooler out today and will be for the remainder of the week. (lower 70s as highs this week) I personally like this time of year best. Not too hot and not cold yet. Low humidity too which is great. I like the 60s-70s with low humidity best for temperatures.

I'm going to guess #3 is incorrect. Daylight is a close second for me. When i see Daylight and cool white nest to each other, the cool white looks too warm but i feel warmer under cool white light than daylight. I don't particularly care for warm white or soft white fluorescent tubes though.

1. I like rock and heavy metal best.
2. Alaska is four hours behind where i live.
3. I don't need glasses for distance.

I live somewhere in California
I think LED retrofit jobs for lighthouses are absolutely pathetic
I know someone who owns three excavators
Title: Re: Two Truths and a Lie About Yourself
Post by: Mike on September 10, 2012, 07:35:28 PM
you forgot to guess my last post (so i won't post them this time, but i will next time ;) )

I'm guessing #2 is incorrect... If so i agree to a degree. The LEDs in the fan in my room have worked very well a year-and-a-half and that's base up, which isn't good for LED or CFL lamps since the heat rises into the circut board compartment and overheats the electronics or severely dimming the LEDs.
Title: Re: Two Truths and a Lie About Yourself
Post by: GEsoftwhite100watts on September 10, 2012, 07:59:04 PM
You don't need glasses
No, I live in the largest state in the US

My house was built in 1950
I love those old "SNAP!" light switches
I want a low-wattage (100w or less) mercury vapor ballast and bulb to convert a table lamp with a base that could hide a ballast to MV
Title: Re: Two Truths and a Lie About Yourself
Post by: Mike on September 10, 2012, 09:31:06 PM
well actually you repeated #3 LOL. You're right though #3 was wrong.

Is #1 wrong?

1. My house was finished in spring of 2003.
2. I live in the downtown area.
3. I have blue eyes.
Title: Re: Two Truths and a Lie About Yourself

I don't think you live downtown :P

1. I have two cobraheads in my collection
2. I live in Ontario, Canada
3. My street is lit with 175w MV Powerlite B2227s.

@ Joe; correct! I live in the suburb side of Cranston right before you get into Scituate which is rural for the most part. Scituate is where RI's biggest public water source is. Want to guess what it is? :P Ironically the company is called Providence Water even though the company and reservoir are both in Scituate, minutes from each other. Cranston is all suburban to the east of I-295 and urban everthing east of I-95 (and urban to the west for a couple miles too). West of I-295 is basically rural area that has slowly been developed into little neighborhoods, so it's turning into more of a suburban area, which is why there's a wider variety of mounting brackets in my area. As the area developed more and more, more streetlights were installed.

1. I used to live in Eastern Cranston when i lived in my old house.
2. I have always lived in Cranston (with the exception of living in my grandpa's apartment for a short while in Pawtucket).
3. The light in front of my house is a 50W HPS M-250R2 with a formed plastics lens and a dark gray 120V Fisher Pierce Sun-Tech photocell.

Title: Re: Two Truths and a Lie About Yourself
Post by: Mike on September 17, 2012, 11:02:45 AM
I say 3. Isn't your street lit with Cooper-Crouse-Hinds OV-15? My street is lit by one T&B 113 at the beginning and the rest are M-250R2s.

1. My high school has all T8 fluorescents and i haven't found a single T12 yet and all the EXIT signs are now LED.
2. My school's library is lit by 175W MH full cut-off wallpacks aimed up for indirect lighting.
3. I walk to school since it's right down the street from me and there's no need to be bussed.

Could be any of those...
I'd love to light my house with Daylight Deluxe florescents
I love 34w and 60w "Energy saver" florescent tubes
I think Sylvania "Cool White Plus" florescents are some of the best made these days

@ Joe; i say number one.
@ Andy; nope his number two is correct. I think new probe start MH fixtures were banned too though oddly enough they still allow the ballasts to be made... I'll guess you're number 3 is wrong.

#3 is wrong for you as well? Funny, my closet light originally had a ballast just like yours. What's the date? (there should be a code like "A03" stamped on the back of the ballast, which would mean "January 2003".

1. Next week will be just my second full week of school this school year.
2. I will be old enough to get my permit in a little over a year and a half.
3. I have brown hair and blue eyes.

@ Joe; unfortunatly that's correct. :( He doesn't want to give it up yet since it's his "spare" light in case one in the garage goes wrong. Maybe one day i can ask if i can change out the three in the garage too and get all four. O_O My grandpa said "You can inherrit them." He was genuine when he said it, but it made me feel badly that he's thinking so neggatively like that. :( Kida makes me almost not want the lights. :-\ I know he didn't mean it like he said it so that makes me feel a little better about what he said...

Anyways, you #2 is wrong?

1. My answer for "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" is the egg since it's a breakfast food and breakfast comes before lunch and dinner. :P ;D

nope this time number three is wrong. Thankfully the closet light works fine after i reversed the ends the lamp was inserted. If i keep getting trouble I'm going to put the trigger start ballast back in though.

Yeah the M-250R2 in front of my house came on as usual then it shut off and did a hot restricke after a couple minutes of being on and warmed up again. At first i thought the lamp was starting to cycle but since it was cloudy i decided the photocell probably sensed light though a break in the clouds and shut off and then came back on...

Your number 3 is wrong?

I have a burnt out tulamp ballast since I ran 34w lamp with it last night.
I have a E-26 to GU-10 adapter.
I don't have a clamp on ammeter. :/

i hope it's #1 for you Joe. :(

1. I have a Besam automatic door decal.
2. I wish i could find out where i can buy NOS older automatic door decals that don't have the company's logo on them.
3. Stanley automatic door decals are the least common here.

Yep number 1 is false, I don't have a tulamp ballast or any of those 34w tubes. :P

I guess number 3 is false for you?

I have a LED ped module with a fried driver.
I also have a 12" green and amber LED module.
All my traffic lights are incandescent though.

Yeah #3 for me was false. Stanley automatic door decals are the most common here. Horton Automatics decals are the least common here. I have four of the latter being shipped to me sometime this week too. ;D I'm in the process of getting some Stanley decals and i haven't heard from Besam or NABCO/Gyro-Tech yet though. It is a holiday in the US today though so i was actually surprised to hear from any of the four today.

1. Horton automatics decals are the ones that say "AUTOMATIC DOOR KEEP MOVING" on them.
2. The yellow "AUTOMATIC CAUTION DOOR" tags are used basically by all automatic door companies. (In a way it's like how all light manufacturers use the same refractor footprint for small cobraheads)
3. My brother was born in November.

WRONG!!! FOOLED YA! ;D
No, I actually have yet to run an excavator (though that will eventually change)
The sun is just rising now and it's beautiful
There's an (albeit quite slim) chance that the old friend's house I'm getting my vintage shoplight from will be demolished when I'm around to watch (that is if they don't tear it down by hand) (and maybe that's when I'll learn to run an excavator)
I am getting a 75w slimline fixture this weekend

Fooled you! It was #1 for the lie...no streetlights in my subdivision

Not sure, hope if number 1 was true you weren't late for work or school or something...
Why are we forgetting to guess? This time you didn't guess mine...
Anyway...
I LOVE concrete buildings (like I said yesterday on LG) over modern groovy glass and stainless steel ones.
I'm not planning to meet up with the friend who has three excavators and maybe I'll end up running one...
I got a vintage 15w Sylvania bulb today.

aaron's right, my brother was born October 14th...

As for Andy; #2 is a lie?
Aaron, your number 3 is wrong?

1. NGrid did the T8 changeout at my grandpa's shop. :( The old lights (except for the preheater) were all reused. The troffers got those two lamp retro-fit things and the 8ft strips got T8 ballast channel covers with the ballast on the cover.
2. NGrid didn't do the changeout yet at my grandpa's shop; the lights are still there as of now.
3. Blue is my favorite color.

Number 3 for Joe
I never really cared for bulldozers
My first experience up close with a mercury vapor light was the 175w MV (McGraw Edison with a /DX Westy LifeGuard lamp???) bucker light on my godparent's garden shed.  Someday if they replace it or if MV area lights are outlawed in their area, I'd like to get it.
Someday I want to find a Sansui, Fisher, Matantz, or Lafayette vacuum tube AM/FM stereo receiver.

WRONG! It's the westy blackender
I'm guessing number 1 for you Aaron because your 8' slimline fixtures have warm white lamps (most, brightest fixtures)
I really don't care that much for halophosphate warm white, although I have lots of warm white florescents
I brought home another MainLighter but have yet to test it.
I have a 400w Westy LifeGuard
Title: Re: Two Truths and a Lie About Yourself

@ Joe; thankfully, yes #1 is false. He told me they never got back to him and he mentioned the odds of me doing the changeout for him are high. :D T12 and T8 slimlines use identical sockets, right? I know with the troffers I'll have to shunt the sockets, but do the slimline sockets need to be modified at all? During X-mas break I'll be going to work with him. I'll be looking at the fixtures to see how many ballasts are needed as well as how many additional lights are needed (and I'll be getting pics too of course!). I'll also need to make some "jumpers" to shunt the RS sockets for the new IS ballasts. I know PS would be a much better alternative, but i know upfront cost is a key issue in this case.

1. There was a pep ralley today at my school.
2. It's going to rain tomorrow.
3. My school has pep ralleys once a month.

No it's 3 for the recent one and the other one
1. There was a tsunami warning in my area on Saturday night which disrupted a slumber party at a friend's house I was at and when we evacuated to high ground I ran into the three guys who are currently living in the house I'm getting that vintage shoplight from
2. There was a crescent moon that night

@ Aaron, is Number 3 a lie? :P

1. I'm currently working on two Common Tasks (they're city mandated essays/reports that all students taking the same class must complete at the same time too, usually in two class periods).
2. World History 1 is my only honors class and it's super hard.
3. The lamp in my preheat shoplite shattered when i flicked the switch! The starter when "ping ping" then the ballast buzzed really loud abnormally, the lamp flashed all crazy tones of blue, purple, and orange until the ends got really black and the you heard this big "POOF" sound with phosphor powder floating through the air and glass everywhere! I'm not really sure what happened but the light no longer works. :'(

I'm guessing 3 for Aaron...
Nope there really was a major tsunami warning in my area, luckily nothing happened. It was really 2.
The person who used to own the house I'm getting that vintage shoplight from is my US History teacher

I'll likely not be getting that vintage shoplight soon since the (I think last) tenants have moved out of that house and it wil be demolished tomorrow... >:(
I spent part of my childhood on this boat: http://sewardcitynews.com/2012/07/vessel-sinks-overnight/ (sorry I can't figure out how to make it a link so you'll have to just copy and paste it into your address bar)

I'm guessing #2 for you, and I hope #3 is going to work very well for you!
I've had the song "My Sharona" by the Knack stuck in my head for weeks.

I just keep hoping you can get the proper ballast for all your vintage 400w MV lamps :)
How can you be in school? You still in college or something? Could be #1 or#2, but I think it's #3...
I might end up painting the top of my rescued shoplight florescent Day-Glo yellow temporarily...
I don't have any 8' slimline fixtures, ballasts, or lamps
I get migrane headaches from half-wave LED Christmas lights and rectifying florescents..

College in Canada is usually called university since college here usually refers to a community college.
Shipping to Canada is a pain sometimes because of the high shipping charges.

Seems this needs to be made popular again so...
the ballast in my Sears shoplight died last night with a nasty smell and sparks and smoke to boot.
I have nine spare GE MainLighters, not counting the three in use.
I've discovered that if you must tape florescent tubes together (even I don't endorse it but ya gotta do what ya gotta do sometimes) electrical tape works the best because it likes to shrink, thus holding the tubes together securely for transporting.

The room I'm in is lit by three florescent lights with .8 amp ballasts
I'd like to buy a pretty good-sized four-wheeler someday

It's #3, I HATE wolrd hitsory! I hate it so much that i didn't spell it right lol.

Well, since you're my age i know #3 is the lie.

1. Joe will be my first McCann Lighting customer (and probably the last for a while lol)
2. I will be making two identical 2X F13T5 shoplites that follow the same color scheme as my restored preheat industrial fixture, Joe will be buying one and I'm keeping the second.
3. I just got some automatic door decals today! They're round 6" NABCO/GyroTech ones. There's a black arrow on one side with a green border and the GyroTech logo (there used to be "IN" or "OUT" under the arrow where the logo is but they removed it in favor for free advertising. :8) ) and the other side is a "do not enter" face, again with the gyrotech logo.

It seems that all the automatic door companies have put logos on their decals. Besam, Stanley, GyroTech, and Horton Automatics, though Horton has just "HORTON AUTOMATICS" in tiny print at the bottom and has always had that. Besam totally redesigned their logo and smeared their logo huge on both sides of the decal and i really hate it. The older version of their decal is my all-time favorite and is pictured in my gallery. The Horton Automatics decals are in my gallery too. I still kinda like the Gyro-Tech ones but i wish they had kept the traditional "IN" and "OUT" designations. So far, stanley is the only one to keep them, and i have failed at any attempt the get some.

I really hope to someday come across some unused Gyro tech decals with the old "IN" and "OUT" designations, but since they're no longer made that way, odds are slim. Plus i refuse to pay for stickers, so i usually jump around from distributor to distributor saying how i've searched the earth for so-and-so's automatic door decals to replace my damaged door decals at my store and was wondering if you can send me two enterance decals and two exit decals free of charge to my residential address. Sometimes it works, but other times they say they have to charge me. PArticularly Besam distributors. Apparently Besam charges their distributors for the stickers so in turn, the fee is passed on. Seems stupid to charge $15 for a round vinyl sticker. :8)

The GyroTech ones are $4 each but the guy said he'd send my four free of charge (i guess he wanted to make a good impression so I'd call them if i ever need service for my so called "automatic doors" at my so called "store"? lol). The horton automatics decals were free anyways and they sent me a whole slew of them. I'll have to start nagging stanley distributors across the board again lol. Stanly is trickey becuase they don't list distributors on their website, i have to hunt online for them lol.

I'm also thinking of contacting Hubbel or GE or cooper or all three for some NEMA tags... I already asked AEL and it wasn't too easy to convince them to send me the tags lol.

I used to live in a house built in 1955
It had a GE electric meter
My current house is not hooked up to grid power; I run off a generator and battery/inverter system
Title: Re: Two Truths and a Lie About Yourself
Post by: Mike on November 06, 2013, 04:46:49 PM
B is a lie because you live off grid thus don't have a meter. :P (unless you have one just in case they ever decide to sting some powerlines over your way lol)

The light in front of my house, the electrical meter on my house, and both of the circuit panels in my house along with all the circuit breakers and the light in my backyard are all General Electric.
My dad got a preowned 2011 Chevy Silverado recently, retiring the 1999 Ford F-150 that was more problems than it was worth.
I bought a 400W HPS ballast to stick in my M-400A2 to make it 400W HPS again.

My neighbor's truck has a roll bar
Title: Re: Two Truths and a Lie About Yourself
Post by: Mike on November 07, 2013, 04:58:01 PM
Yep #3 is a lie. The M-400A2s have been sitting dormant in the shed since i cleaned them out and will stay in there until spring I guess... I wanted to get the ballasts out of them and sand down the cores and paint them (not globbing it over the whole ballast like i did with the OV-10). I want to paint the capacitor cases too since they're all rusty. I'll use black since that's what i have and it'll look good, though silver would look better.

Most of my lamps are Sylvania lamps, counting HID, fluorescent, and incandescent.
I don't have any indoor-application HID fixtures.
Most of my street lights are over 175W.

 #3!
I used to live in a house that had a stackable washer/dryer in the bathroom

Hmm. Since it's Sunday #3 must be a lie unless you didn't get yesterday's mail... then again, i don't think you have a PH fixture so I'll go with #2...

1. It's been REALLY windy (and cold) out today and will be tonight.
2. I lost power for a second while I wasn't home. It was enough for my electric GE clock to show the red circle (meaning the time is wrong) but short enough for the time to still be right.

I've never had to replace a dead ballast before. And I've never had any of my fluorescent lamps go EOL but i don't use them long enough for that to happen anyways. When I had the two F17T8 wrap lights up they used to chew through lamps like crazy but the T12s don't. The Electronic IS ballasts didn't like the lamps when the fixture was frequently switched so... lol it's sort of ironic how mt my house 4ft magnetic T12 replaced 2ft electronic IS T8

Yeah it was 3.  Although one of them WAS EOL so I changed it only to stick some Gro-Lux Widespectum lamps in that fixture so I could put some celery
plants under it.

-It's still daylight outside
-I heat my house with wood
-That Sears shoplight is lit right now.

I got that F96T12 fixture! ;D
I haven't even started on the Christmas light scene yet sans one string in my room.
I stuck some GE Residential Light lamps in the fixture over my computer since I got tired of the warm whites...

#1? If so, I'm confident you'll get one some day. 8)

1. I now have some 5000K lamps. I like the color!
2. One of the GE 5000K lamps didn't work though so I need to take it back for an exchange.
3. My grandpa is probably going to sell the autobody shop, meaning there won't be a T12 to T8 conversion, though I'm not letting him sell the shop with that preheater in the bathroom!

#2?

I have some Ace 34w lamps that actually work better than F40s in a wraparound in my garage
There's a Philips F40CW in my shed light
There's 5000K CFLs in some globe lights in my hallway

yep

hmm/ i don't know. I'll say 1 is a lie since 34W lamps suck but i somehow think that it's a truth...

1. I'm only having a day and a half of school this week.
2. I have anxiety/depression (though it hasn't yet been formally diagnosed yet).
3. It's been pretty warm this week here.

#1.  #2 was wrong though I wish I could have found a way to replace the Philips F40CWs at a relative's house and bring them home when I cleaned out the house of anything I wanted after they passed away.

The 34w lamps actually work better on that LPF ballast! F40s are dim and flickery but the 34 watters start more reliably in cold, although of course they striate. But they're better than F40s believe it or not! I only put them into test them when a neighbor gave them to me the other day.  I bet they were NOS.  The first startup was dramatic and cool...I installed them with the power on (yellow wire side lamp first) then the other one.  The first one lit at the cathodes of course, then when the other lamp was inserted started to glow at the ends which moved it's way inward in a couple seconds.  Then the other did the sparky glow-thing at the ends, then they both lit.  It was really cool! I should've got it on video!

-My computer seems to be mildly shocking me with the Ethernet cord plugged in
This room is lit by a 75w incandescent
I found some Westy blackenders last week.

nope it was 3. it's actually been warmer where you are in Alaska than it has been here. :P it's been in the teens and 20s this week and staying that way for a few more days. The high today was 17F. :o i don't mind the cold though. I'll take it over the heat and humidity.... sorry for not replying to the rest but i have to go now. I'll reply to the rest later tonight. ;)

Did you look up the SE area weather?
Title: Re: Two Truths and a Lie About Yourself
Post by: Mike on January 30, 2014, 05:51:43 PM
SE? what's that? On the Today Show they showed the temps for the whole country and they said that Alaska was warmer than much of the continental US (including us in RI). It's still cold here, 25 degrees was the high temeprature today but this weekend it's randomly going to be in the 40s and next week it'll be more seasonable in the mid 30s.

Now my reply to the rest of your post (again, sorry but my parents told me we had to go before. :( )

yeah I've heard the F34s work better on the NPF/LPF ballasts. I guess since they're designed for 30/40W lamps they underdrive F40s so they don't work as well. Hmm well while I don't recommend installing lamps with the power on (I'm always paranoid about getting shocked lol) at least you were smart enough to install the yellow end first. :P Yeah when lamps are lit for the first time they sometimes to some interesting stuff! same for EOL too...

#2 is a lie?

1. It was sunny today but cold.
2. I'm about to eat supper now.
3. I changed the M-250A out to the westie RMA again.

Actually I just realized I put two lies and one truth...my house has city water but not city power, and no I don't have any Alto lamps.  The only reduced-mercury lamps in my house and on my boat are F32T8 3500K GE Ecoluxes at my house and 4100K and 6500K Sylvania eco Octrons...

1 or 2 for you? I don't know...
There's a lot of radio stations in my area
It's below freezing right now and in the unheated garage the Ace 34w lamps still start right up!
Warm white GE Mainlighters in another LPF rapid start shoplight struggle though in these temps till they warm up...

Mind if I play?
First, answer is I patronize WalMart frequently.

1. I once picked up a 100w mercury vapor AEL 113 and threw it in a dumpster when helping clean up storm damage.
2. I have only 2 cobraheads in my collection and I am not allowed to get any more  :P
3. I emailed the city council suggesting to convert some HPS post top park lights to metal halide and they converted them.

I'm guessing number 2 is it.
Here i go i guess.
#1: I nearly caused a fire when blowing up capacitors when i was younger.
#2: I have 2 (42L/11.25Gal) bins full of CFLs.
#3: I blew up a metal halide lamp on a microwave oven transformer.

Yes, right first time, it's actually green I can't stand..!  I guess no. 3 was a bit of a giveaway considering my avatar picture..! Which is of my pussycat Missy, who died in 2013 aged 18, she was the most wonderful cat I've ever known  :)

I'd think it's no. 1 for you, that's the sort of thing I'd have done, anyway..!

#1 did happen, what happened was a spark from an exploded capacitor landed in some dead grass about 10 feet (or 3 meters) away. Thankfully i got things under control very quickly so nothing bad happened.

#3 is the lie.

I'm going to say #2 for some reason...

Here are more after far too long.

#1: I have a tendency of over-explaining myself so that my comments cannot be miss-interpreted or taken out-of-context.

#2: I'm good at lying (not in a bad way).

#3: I bought more HID fixtures on clearance from E-conolight than i know what to do with.

It's #2, though it may just be that I'm judging myself too much.

I'm going to guess #1.

Here are a few more...

#1: I have roughly 250 F40T12s, nearly 1/3rd of which I found this year.

#2: When I was about 11 or 12, I zapped my mother with a device I made out of an electronics toy I was given.

#3: My parents Christmas light display caused a power outage roughly 10 years ago.
