Title: TGdaily - Are LED lights hazardous to your health?
Post by: rjluna2 on March 01, 2011, 02:55:42 PM
Are they serious about the Lead content of those red LED?  Read here at the Are LED lights hazardous to your health? (http://www.tgdaily.com/sustainability-features/54368-are-led-lights-hazardous-to-your-health#).  :o (http://galleryoflights.org/mb/Smileys/default/rolleyes.gif)

No more dangerous than any other electronic waste, especially older stuff which used lead based solders, which pretty much has been stopped for the last few years now.

For years, now that LEDs already don't contains any lead.
The US talks too much about energy and environment saving, but do more damage then benefits (Ie. ALTOs: less mercury on lamps, very much more mercury from power plants).
I think that this article is possibly false and misleading: LEDs that contains lead, aren't in production anymore, and arsenic never ever used in LEDs at any time.
This article even isn't based on correct researches, or is based on false researches.
Literally, this article is a one big lie!!!!!

@dor123: These LEDs contains Gallium arsenide (GaAs) doped on the die and Lead coating on the conjuction.  So they were talking about the posioning of Arsenic and Lead element that they were alarmed.  In other words, they are pressing their panic button about the issue of LEDs posioning :-\

Yeah, I agree some of the older electronics also had some pretty nasty stuff in them too...

Pretty all semiconductors contain Arsenic at least as a dopant, so include LED's.
Up to now quite correct.

But the problem with As danger is with the amount: Except for old inefficient LEDs (using GaAs as base material; what are and never were really used as an illumination source, but only as indicators) the As is used only as a dopant, what mean few micrograms per kilogram of the main semiconductor material. And as the total amount of the semiconductor material in one product does not exceed few grams, we are talking about nanograms of As per lightbulb, really not very much.
I guess the exposure from natural background As concentration is many decades above the amount in these lamps...
So the "As danger for customers in LED lightbulbs" i would really classify as a hoax...

Maybe some danger s associated with the manufacture: Semiconductor processing require quite wide range of really nasty chemicals (where the As is the one of the least danger), what have to be handled and stored in the plant, making it an industrial accident hazard. So with booming semiconductor processing facilities the associated risk grow in the total. But such risk is with any other human activity on the planet...
