According to the article, they want to skip buying those light bulbs :P
See at What to Buy at the Dollar Store -- and What to Skip (http://shine.yahoo.com/financially-fit/buy-dollar-store-skip-171700946.html) at the last paragraph.
Personally, I have seen Sylvania regular life bulbs as well as double life bulbs version at the Dollar Store ;D

there is a trick for buying bulbs at dollar general, first during the week shop for small things
that you need here and there. wait until you get the 5 dollar off on 20 dollar purchase recipt
that the time i walk out with two boxes of bulbs for free after 20 bucks spent at the store.

It can depend on the store. At Dollar Generals, I remember seeing they usually GE Double Life White bulbs, and I think Family Dollar had Sylvanias. The article specifically mentions off brand dollar store bulbs. There is a local "$1.25 store" that has cheap no-name bulbs, as well as CFLs I wouldn't trust in the middle of a dirt field.

I don't find anything wrong with off-brand incandescent lamps but i would never trust off-brand CFLs or MH lamps. i'd use off-brand MV and HPS lamps, but I'd rather use Sylvania lamps period for any lamp (except LED and CMH).

I actually liked the Sunbeam lamps, they gave an old fashioned frosted look!
