Take to Task What's not working
Light poles outlive lanes
Atlanta
Take to Task received an e-mail from Gene Surber of Atlanta last week wanting to know why the huge metal standards that used to hold the reversible lane lights on Peachtree Street in Brookwood are still standing - years after the lane itself was removed.
"Ten years ago there were reversible lanes on Peachtree Street from the
old I-85 exit to about
Collier Road," Surber wrote. "Standards were installed to hold the lights that indicated [the flow of traffic.] The lights were removed years ago, but the standards that held them are still very much there."
We drove Peactree from just south of the Spring - Buford Connector to just north of Collier Road and counted seven pairs of standards and one solo, a total of fifteen metal monsters looming over passing motorist and pedestrians.
"That stretch of Peachtree is blighted by utility poles and lots of power and cable lines," Surber wrote, "and the unused standards certainly don't help."
We sent a few photos over to Atlanta's Department of Public Works and asked for their perspective. We hadn't received a response at deadline, so check back later this week for an update.
