indeed a super rare lamp!.....isn't the arctube on this one made of single crystal saphire?
TiCoune66   [Jan 03, 2011 at 09:00 PM]
I think it's the same material used in standard HPS lamps, it is just heated at a higher temperature during manufacture.
Silverliner14B   [Jan 03, 2011 at 09:50 PM]
That's right the arc tube is made of sapphire! Ceramic heated high enough to melt into a single solid substance. Nice find Geoff! I have one you know but it doesn't say "property of ny city".

Ha Gull! I hate u too! U will never find this lamp! How high do they have to heat the arctube to make the saphire?

Wow, very nice and super rare lamp, did GE or Sylvania ever make a similar lamp?
Silverliner14B   [Jan 04, 2011 at 06:56 PM]
For more information, click here. @Joe347v Westinghouse was the only American manufacturer who made them as far as I know, the other ones were made by Osram-GEC and Thorn in the UK.

wow! very nice lamp..i wonder how long those last? i bet sodium cant diffuse through that saphire wall!

@geoff i imagine they have to heat it to ceramic's melting point which has to be thousands of degrees, ceramic is some tough stuff.
