LPS Tunnel Lights
|
These light up the tunnels that go under the Long Beach airport. the one on the right is EOL, once fluorescent, then LPS now HPS. Also neon signs tied to carbon monoxide detectors telling you to turn off motor anddo not enter, I dont know if they are still there, I saw them about 6 months ago, never seen them lit. Photo 6-80

Regrettably tunnel lighting in Israel tunnels in Intercity roads are a direct victim of the moving from HPS lighting to LEDs color washing (Philips/Color Kinetics DMX-512 fixtures replaced the former HPS lighting), which although more beautiful, are much more power hungry and less lights. Tunnels in intercity roads don't needs so luxury lighting and LPS lighting is much better.
LPS may be even more environment friendlier light source then the LEDs themselves in terms of materials.
Even if both sources contains no mercury, LEDs may contains another toxic materials (LEDs are semiconductors) that don't exist in LPS lamps (Simply borate glass, sodium, noble gases [Argon+neon usually] and tungsten).
The only reason for their high price is because of their rarity (Theoretically they should be cost only slightly higher then fluorescent lamps).
