Do you "really" hate, or like LEDs?
« on: January 11, 2018, 05:06:49 PM »
I use LED for general purpose use, thats really it, some people don't like it, because they tend to fail at least a few months so, due to the driver supply of the LED. I don't like it, when they replace perfectly good HID fixtures to LED, even in parking lots. Do you agree?

I agree with you 100% on that sweetheart, seeing the patches of darkness between lighting poles where they have replaced HID with LED is depressing. I have even seen patches of darkness underneath the fixture due to lack of optical control.!!  :o

I like LEDS because they have many shapes and they are bright.

I am mixed in my love for them. I understand that they are a vast improvement in efficiency over incandescent and halogen bulbs. And they have made great strides in being able to closely replicate the warm, high-CRI light of incandescents. But their longevity is greatly over-stated. I've had many LED bulbs fail with fewer than 1,000 hours on them. Failures in streetlighting applications are evident everywhere. And I despise daylight colored light sources EXCEPT for use in commercial or medical settings. I think most consumers don't understand the concept of light color. I was in Lowe's and the sale clerk was helping the customer pick out a replacement A19 for their exterior lighting and he erroneously said the daylight ones were brighter. I hate hate hate daylight bulbs used in things like chandeliers, porch lights, exterior floodlighting, and lampposts. The cold daylight wrecks any ambiance of quaint streets and paths lit by 2,700-3,000K light sources. Again, I think most people don't even understand or recognize this difference but it drives me crazy. So that is one reason I really don't like LEDs because they have made daylight bulbs too common.

I don't really like LEDs for use in street lighting, but for general household illumination they are OK. As far as me hating LED streetlights, some are better than others.
