Title: i hate sodium vapour! there! i said it!

i know there are a lot of HID enthusiasts on here who would prefer any manner of HID over LED or induction, and i have to say that simply isn't the case with me. i can't stand sodium vapour lamps. before sodium vapour lamps, night time looked more peaceful, you could more easily see the stars, and you actually wanted to sleep. the most disturbing thing about SV lamps is that they don't emulate daylight, really, they emulate sunrise. so, as soon as the sun sets, instead of getting the peaceful moon, you get immediate sunrise... all night long.

here in georgia they've replaced every street light with SV, there are a few scattered locations that have installed metal halide or induction, but they are on private streets. i get so used to it i just kind of forget about it, until i leave town for somewhere more rural such as south carolina or alabama where MVs are still in use. last week, i went to montgomery alabama where my grandmother used to live, and before we left i wanted to take a drive down her street where i spent a pretty big chunk of my childhood, and the street was entirely lit with white lights, i believe they were 100 watt DX lamps, but i wouldn't swear to it. it was so peaceful, it was like having the night back again. and the street was lit up just enough to see anyone walking along the side of the road but not bright enough to glare into your house or make it impossible to see the stars. and the entire street was this way, with trees all around and not a SV light in sight— that's impossible to find anywhere in atlanta.

so, look, if they can make LED lights that don't look like they're blinking when you drive by them and don't blast through my windows, i am fine with that— in fact i wish they'd hurry up and replace them if they're going to do it. ever since they installed them, a cloudy sky at night looks like a purple-orange nightmare from venus. forget HID, if i can have my night back with LEDs i'll take it!
