could i just screw one of these into a flood light outdoors or even into a light fixture inside? would it work (and not explode on me??)

Those don't explode but they get hot but yes they can screw into any standard socket. But to screw in flood lights, I would use

But I recommend using if outdoors to use protected housed fixture, not a totally open socket fixture..so they can protect the bulbs and cover the sides to weatherproof as possible.

i did look at that, but i couldn't find one without the DX coating— i wanted the green glow from a clear merc. i'm thinking about putting these in some floor lamps i have on my porch. would it be appropriate for that?
