Title: Phone call from my power company offering 3 free CFL's
Post by: mercuryvaporrocks on April 19, 2012, 04:19:38 PM
I just got a phone call from my power company offering me three CFL's, of course I said I wasn't interested and hung up on them. When will those people get the message that I'm not interested in their awful CFL bulbs, it just makes me sick the way people think nowadays. :8)

Why exactly do you call them awful? Sure they may not have the light quality of incandescent but they are great for some applications... I would take them, they are free after all... :8)

Someone from my gas company gave me three cheapo CFLs and a couple of those faucet aerators around half a year ago.

My grandpa tells me all the time "if it's free, it's for me". ;D Anyways, if you get 'em for free and they're cheapos just resell them.

I just don't like the fact that power companies try to shove CFL bulbs down our throats, CFL bulbs aren't going to save you that much money on your utility bills and plus the CFL bulbs are dangerous too and won't work in all applications.

Really? A 23 watt lamp wont save much over a 100 watt lamp? Actually I'm pretty sure that's almost 80% less electricity... They can be used in pretty much every situation, though using them base up in a enclosed fixture will reduce the life, it would be that big a deal, I did it and the lamp must of got over 23,000 hours on it. The only hazard is the mercury, if you handle them carefully they won't break and there is no hazard. And sure, there have been some reports of fires from CFLs, however incandescent fixtures are more likely to get too hot causing fires and burns. I do prefer incandescent though for most living areas in a house.

Many of today's CFL's are phony in terms of their ratings and the "Save 70% energy" is totally phony. Also, why do power companies do this all the time?

I don't know. WE pay for the energy usage, not the power company so who knows what's up with that. I do know my local power company (National Grid) has close ties with GE, though NGrid is way to cheap to give away anything for free. :8) I bought a "Green lighting" kit from NGrid at the post office for $10 a few months ago though. It included two GU24 base desk lamps, 12 A-shaped 14W MaxLite CFLs, two LED nightlights, and a 1-year limited warrenty on everything.

People here in Southern California say they only saw like a $1-2 dollar difference on their electric bills after outfitting their whole houses to CFL. Plus they said CFLs often burned out faster than incandescents and they ended up not saving any money. Sometimes I see CFLs discounted by utilities but no one buys them anymore.

the only time CFLs are save money if you dont have big loads  in order your biggist expense, is electric furnance, A/C, electric water heater, dyer, electric stove. and CFLS are last on the list. that explanes why only small savings, and the gov want to bully us on lighting.

that one reason why i used cothline it drys as fast as the dryer does, second
I cook on a BBQ pit, third you can get hot water from miles of piping on the roof,
you can cool a house down when you need to water plants out side. cheap free
if the water company spend energy pumping water to your house, you can hareness some
of that cooling energy when you take a shower or water plants out side in the evening.
ther are ways to skin a cat on energy company. just remember energy is a vicious cycle
and how you manage them. that the key
